Great video, great effect! we used a similar technique for my film, but instead of attaching a washer to the condom, we cut it in half and re-stck it with tape, when we threw it against the wall is created a really nice blood/brain splat effect! check it out on DIVX (Plug Alert) www.geocities.com/infectedfilms

great tip, just wondering how big you cut a cross in the shirt? do you cut it big enough so you pull the washer through the shirt? or is the cross small to where the washer doesnt make it through?

You know...maybe he didn't put fake blood in a condom. Maybe he was actually wearing one, and all of a sudden it started filling up with blood and after he removed it, it somehow exploded and thats how he got the idea?

Only problem I noticed with that is that the washer is visible, but that can be edited. Another problem is where the hell are us younger viewers gonna get condoms? "Mom, I need condoms!" "I'm going to use them for a movie!"....yeah...

I wonder what he meant when he said "use black thread if you're shooting outdoors" -- if there's sunlight, wouldn't that make it a great deal MORE visible?

That was some really GREAT thinking. Piece of advice.. use NON-LUBRICATED CONDOMS. Also, if your budget is super tight, contact your local "AIDS Health Services" center. Condoms have a shelf-life.. and in many cases the service groups are actually caught with a surplus of near-expiration condoms due to lack of volunteer distributors.

I found myself wondering about the washer appearing in the shot. BUt then I remembered that my student-film days were in the VHS era.. before we had computer video editing and photoshop-like post production. Nowadays, even a modest editing package can facilitate the manual editing of frames, even if you have to copy the frames 1 by 1 and edit them manually using Photoshop or Gimp. (I did that once to do a "split screen" shot of an actor looking at himself in a coffin.)

As for the "Black Thread".. remember that video cameras work by capturing light. So the lightness of the background will generally wash out the dark thread making it appear invisible. While a thread that is lighter than the background will stand out like a sore thumb. Again this is a "daylight" shooting issue.

I felt the gist of the tutorial's message was "do some screen tests to see what works best for you".

works with ballons if u want more shots cheaper (but u don't get as much blood).

Now I finally know what to do with all those bloody condoms I've been collecting!

I'm glad I found this site. It would be cool if you could teach us how to make a good body double. A more realistic one anyway.

Hey ZEBRAGRRL, you might not have to edit out the washer.
You could cover it in some red cloth/foam rubber so it looks like a small piece of flesh being shot out of someone. But hey, that's up to you, and I'm not sure if flesh comes out when someone is shot, I've never done it, lol.

ok well i make mostly stop animation films. i dont know if you have expirence in that field, but i making a zombie short film, and i need realistic blood effects, but it has to be in stop animation, and i seem to be flabergasted. and also i was wondering if you have any realistic zombiefication methods for a 7" figure. i have a green screen, but please help. im trying to get it in a film festival

o and one more thing, i have decided to change it from horror to comedy so its going to be a female deer zombie, so accordingly its going to be "FAWN OF THE DEAD" how to make it would be nice, like a smaller figure.

Wow. I thought I was the only one that used that technique. I only started using them about 2 years ago because i used balloons instead because i coun't get my hands on them. But wow great technique dude.

I own and operate a small production company in New Zealand specialising in SFX. I have a top notch blood recipe that not only looks real, it acts like real blood. It coagulates, splats, drips, spreads and runs like real blood.

One thing to make this effect even cheaper - buy 99-Cent Store condoms. A lot of those places have 'em.

What was that he poured into the water to make "blood" is that just an insane amount of red food coloring? because I've tried it and it always turns a "gears of war" style pinkish color

Psycho_HighwayLB The way to fix the colour of your fake blood is by adding a a bit of chocolate sauce untill it looks good. And use corn syrup too, a good mix of corn syrup, chocolate sauce, red food colouring and a wee bit of water to make it the right consistancy is always nice.

The effect worked beautifully and made a nice fountain of squirting blood, but in the wrong place.
Of course being a intelligent feller I decided to prepare this experiment in my living room with a floor covering carpet. So... well, one thing led to another, and my actors tummy decided to blow up in a gorgeous manner right in the middle of the carpet.
So boys and girls dont be a dumb a** like me and prepare ur stuff in area that can be cleaned.
Oh and do not buy the cheapest superglue that you can find, it doesnt have to be expenisve either, but the cheap stuff i bought didnt stick properly, which eventually lead to this catastrophe.

i was thinking on how to make home made gelitten you can use k-y jelly and fake blood or corn syrup with red food coloring and blue to make it darker mix the blood with the jelly and add flower to thicken it

u can also use a rubber nurse glove
