As can be stated due to the number of subscribers that are on this site, Internet Video is becoming more and more popular. Just like having bad audio, having bad video quality will hurt you if you seriously want to break into the industry.

Image spending all this time on your Director of Photography reel, and then when you put online to show producers and what not and send them the link in e-mail, they look at it and go, ew, what shity quality. Alot of clients won't know that it's the upload quality and blame it on you for shooting it bad, which is hopefully not the case.

So, I think this is a very very important Weekend Extra that is very informative. Of course, there are other ways to upload your video, you can try using www.vimeo.com which lets you load higher than 100mb.

    Nice ep, Steve.

I found this one of the most useful weekend extras, I hate how the quality comes out on my videos this will really help anybody know how to do it with vegas?

  • steve nelson wrote in reply on November 23, 3:07 pm

I dont know much about Vegas, but if you export a full quality version...and download that software from Windows...you can make a .wmv thats the highest possible quality for under 100 megs.

  • felix78 wrote in reply on November 27, 8:02 am

U can compresse like this in Vegas just aswell as in Final cut. Just youtube it...

I can't believe why menny ppl don't think vegas is a good program (i'm not blaming u steve). It has pretty much the same FX and possibilities as Final cut. When my mum buys a new camera, i'll borrow it and i'll show you woot me means..

    FANTASTIC WORK!!!!!

Boo to anyone that put this episode down. Sure, maybe it wasn't their usual funny stuff but it was certainly very helpful to those of us that likes to share files on youtube.

That being said, I do have a question for the dearly charming and witty Guru Steve. I have noticed that I have trouble uploading certain formats of videos. I usually create my videos in wmv to only get stuck having to change half of them to avi due to Youtube being fussy. Do you have any recommendations for programs that will let you change file types while maintaining the quality of video?

  • steve nelson wrote in reply on November 23, 4:04 pm

Hmmm, that's strange...when I used PC, .WMV was my choice for uploading to YouTube. How exactly is the YT uploader getting fussy?

Turning your file into an Mpeg4 is the surest way to get good quality videos on YouTube. QuickTime Pro ($29.99) will create .mp4's is you export .avi from your editing program.

Maybe someone in the forums knows a free Windows mpeg encoding program.

  • InternWally wrote in reply on November 23, 9:05 pm

you can also try MPEG StreamClip. It lets you convert to mpg's and avi's and all that type of stuff.

  • The Future X-Beck wrote in reply on November 24, 9:46 am

I'll privately contact you Steve and let you take a peak. Perhaps you can tell me what I'm doing wrong. All I know is more often than not, if I try to upload a video in wmv format, I get the "Failed (unable to convert video file)" error.

Heres what little info I got from the youtube site.

  • Market Fresh wrote on November 23, 4:01 pm

Just as a quick note: I wouldn't worry any more about the 100mb file size limit, Google/Youtube are uping the size limit to 1GB. Awesome!

    http://www.betanews.com/article/YouTube_Increases_Upload_Limits_Provides_Batch_Uploader/1194627266

  • Market Fresh wrote in reply on November 23, 4:13 pm

Looks like they already increased the limit. To take advantage of this you need to find where it says 'Upload files larger than 100MB or upload many files at once!' on the right hand side of the uploads page and click the button there. You'll have to download an uploading program, but hey for higher quality stuff it's worth it right?

Ironically, the new uploader only works on Windows right now.

I feel robbed. But as to my main question, anyone know of a program that can de-interlace videos at a touch of a button, like Final Cut?
    Thanks

  • steve nelson wrote in reply on November 23, 7:38 pm

    I came across this:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/deinterlace

Let me know how it goes!

  • tinokiev wrote on November 23, 10:00 pm

I think if you use Compressor (comes with FCP) You can do faster and more complex exports than from FCP straight, You should export your file as a quicktime movie no selfcontained. which its pretty quick, then open that file in compressor.

  • grizzly69 wrote on November 23, 11:07 pm

PC bashing eh? I have had no trouble at all doing any kind of video project on my Windows XP computer. The big boys in Hollywood use Avid (It runs on a PC). Anyway, the best inexpensive program I've used for video editing and more (for example, de-interlacing exported video) is Adobe Premiere Elements. It's only $100 and I've been able to do some pretty complex tricks with it. Macs are cool, but I don't have the money to invest in a whole new video production rig. Please don't alienate us PC users by saying we should get a Mac.

  • ET Entertainment wrote in reply on November 25, 5:10 pm

The AVID was built for Mac's then PC's got so popular...ooooh, big deal....that it was released for PC's, but majority of AVID users use Mac's.

    PERIOD. THE END.

  • termin8or123 wrote on November 24, 2:12 am

Um, I thought mpeg4 was the worst setting for youtube... The best is WMV, and FLV. Because youtube converts your video into FLV format already... They did a test on quality, and FLV was first, then WMV, and last mpeg...

  • The Future X-Beck wrote in reply on November 24, 9:51 am

I don't know who "they" is but youtube recommends
    We recommend the following settings:

    MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
640x480 resolution (* most updated recommendation)
    MP3 audio
    30 frames per second

My only problem about going to a mac is that they are way more expensive then pc's. Otherwise I wouldn't mind going to mac. My brother uses them in the color graphic and printing industry and the work on a mac can't be touched from what I've seen. Keep up the info and great work guys.

Sorry, had to comment. First: If your using a mac, go jump out a window.
Second: Windows programs can export as quicktime as well, ya know.
Third:YouTube now accepts files up to a gig, as long as you use their special uploader program.

  • CPOStudios wrote on November 25, 1:18 pm

I'd just like to add that if you make a new sequence in FCP and drag your main sequence into it, you can apply your filters only once and it will affect your whole video. This would be useful for optimizing the color for something like Youtube or De-Interlacing the entirety of your video. Also, most QT codecs allow you to export a de-interlaced video just by checking a box.

And as others have said, if you render out "full quality" video from an editor on a PC, if you use Quicktime Pro ($30) you can do everything that was demonstrated in the video just by opening the final file and hitting "Export" under "File." If you don't want to shell out 2 grand + for a Mac, this might be a better option.

  • Matt Schwarz wrote on November 25, 1:43 pm

  • Ivan Kukharchuk wrote on November 25, 3:11 pm

Sad, but WORSE IM video ever :(

I expected some REALLY USEFUL technical details, maybe some info on flv format, or some real tricks of advanced features of XviD codec, because sometimes setting proper options for 2-pass encoding makes video look a WAY better, while keeping it even smaller, than just encoded with your nasty 1500 kbps.

    Useless stuff.
