  • smartyarty wrote in reply on November 9, 11:27 am

    too expensive

  • Cityscape Pictures wrote on November 9, 11:33 am

Although its expensive, this is very cool, if i had a couple thousand pounds to spend i would buy one

  • Killa±Kiarenh±London!! wrote on November 9, 11:41 am

i bet erik could make one, like it wouldnt be nowere as good but better than a hand! hey! why dont we ask him on BFX? and by the way you should listen to justin and dont do that "1st or 2nd or 3rd" thing! its really annoying and too competitive!

  • felix78 wrote in reply on November 9, 12:18 pm

I've lrdy made a request for this on the forums. but didn't know it was called steadicam so i said Chest camera holder. or something alike.

Btw, great show! i still can't believe how that arm works so smoothly xD

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 9, 1:45 pm

Yes! Listen to me! No one cares what post number you have. Please leave something somewhat meaningful :)

  • indiana_jones wrote in reply on November 9, 12:07 pm

oh and its not the weekend until 1am its just over 5am.
    FYI

  • Killa±Kiarenh±London!! wrote in reply on November 9, 6:27 pm

WTF? anyways, its the weekend as soon as work/school ends. technically it starts at 12am but you look at it that way if you have any socail life!

  • daydreamer1 wrote in reply on November 12, 9:45 am

    probably another time zone thing

  • tjack004 wrote on November 9, 12:28 pm

This one was worthless unless of course you have an extra 10 bones to spend. Now if he would have given a good low cost alternative you could build, (Indy Mogul is all about DIY right?) this video would have been worth watching.

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 9, 1:46 pm

There's the famous $15 steadicam you can build. Just as a filmmaker this should be interesting to see how these work.

  • sweetpotatojunction wrote on November 9, 1:11 pm

    3:39--camera in the shot
Otherwise, good one. even if i could never afford one of those dohickeys.

  • declan murphy wrote on November 9, 1:18 pm

My school spent the majority of their budget for film studies last year. Now we have pretty much no books, and have to buy all our own tapes and edit at home.
But the shots look amasing and so much easier to set up than track and dolly.
thats test video was funny by the way.

  • declan murphy wrote in reply on November 9, 1:35 pm

sorry i missed a pretty vital piece of information out from my post above.
i meant to say that my school spent the majority of their film studies budget on this steadicam.

  • neoglitz wrote in reply on November 9, 2:50 pm

I have a Poor Man's Steadicam that works well, obviously not like the $8k unit. Maybe I need to do a vid for submission on it.

  • zombiejoel wrote on November 9, 3:43 pm

This video isn't totally useless, its more of just like a presentation to people who may want to become a steadicam operator. I knew steadicams were expensive but dang I would totally buy one if i had the money. Plus they a way cool looking. Nice vid.

  • Bones wrote on November 9, 3:51 pm

I really liked this video. Very informative. I own a glidecam and have yet to really put it to use. Id be interested in seeing a video on that or more techincal stuff like this in the future.

  • Kevinaz (anon) wrote on November 9, 4:27 pm

Why does a steadicam need batteries?

  • Spaceye wrote in reply on November 9, 6:40 pm

If it has batteries, It can give better shots with an electronic arm and motion detection softwares, rather than a mechanical one.

  • Jacob-ne-a wrote on November 9, 6:18 pm

that was a great episode! wish I could say more but...

  • australia wrote on November 9, 6:28 pm

that was a great episode. seeing what pros and low budget pros actually use is a great way to inspire low-dollar equivalents. There are great tutorials on the web about how to make a cheap steadycam.
Guys, I'd love to see an episode on 35mm adapters, ie how to make them.

  • Killa±Kiarenh±London!! wrote on November 9, 6:31 pm

hey justin, is weekend extra for speshal effect ideas and things that us indy mogulers send in? just to clarify, i want to send in a weekend extra about something gruesomely c.............
lol! i have alreddy sent a q into q and erik. its about those lines you get when filming witha camcoder. anyways, do you think you could get it on nxt friday plz? its with a chestnut haired kid on it ( me)! i relly need to know!!!!!!

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 10, 2:51 pm

Weekend extra is very much about you, the viewer! Sometimes Steve whips up the episode, and sometimes we put up submissions. We've got a good number of them so you may have to wait a while until we get to yours, friend

  • KMProductions wrote on November 9, 6:34 pm

    wow, That's was really cool

  • Solo0312 wrote on November 9, 7:21 pm

That was really great. I know it's expensive to go the steadicam route but people pay a lot to rent it if you own one which can make those 8 G's go away really quick. There are alternative methods to making the "poor mans" steadicam which I'd also love to see on the show. I've seen versions made with metal pipe and lead weights on the bottom that seem to work . . . ok . . . but nothings gonna give you the full flexibility like the real toys. Erik, make us one dude!! Then let me borrow it ;)

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 10, 2:52 pm

Exactly. Kyle (the guy who made this ep) is working to become a professional DP. An investment like this will keep generating money as long as people keep hiring him to do shoots. It will return the invest many times over - much better than buying a big tv :)

  • IrishDrummer7707 wrote on November 9, 8:56 pm

    Like were gonna have $8,000!!!

  • grizzly69 wrote on November 9, 9:33 pm

I have see demos of the Steadicam Merlin (~$900) and was completely impressed with the smoothness of the shots. I have also seen many other similar options for far less than $8000. Maybe not as good, but more reasonable to us common folk. I still liked the episode and learned from it.

  • stickymovies wrote on November 9, 10:40 pm

  • Blake (anon) wrote on November 10, 11:20 am

What's up with the audio in this episode? This was pretty crazy. I've been working on a design for a DIY one of these... on a budget, of course, heh. ...A skateboard fight. Of course. Haha.

  • Monkey from the bomb squad wrote on November 10, 11:21 am

the steadicam is too much $$$$ where can you get it for cheap?

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 10, 2:53 pm

    Google "$15 steady cam"

  • punkandska66 wrote in reply on November 10, 3:23 pm

justin, its 14 not 15, but whatever. they dont help thay much, i built one.

  • DoddProductions wrote on November 10, 1:08 pm

Cool vid, but as others have said the $$$ is a deterant to just going out to bye one.
Please show a DIY on this for the guys working on a McDonalds budjet. (not that I work at McDonalds. . .)

  • Luchastyle wrote on November 11, 8:57 am

i saw mention of the poor man's steadicam, but i saw no link. so here is the URL for info on how to build your own steady cam for $14. steadycam.org. maybe someone already posted it. but i didn't see it.

  • SanitySource wrote on November 11, 10:14 am

this steadicam is worth breaking into a film college for. or somehow mounting the 14 dollar cam to ur body like that. couldnt be too hard. and wtf does it need batteries for. especially 1500$ batteries . what are thos? like 170 000 v

  • WesScog wrote in reply on November 11, 12:54 pm

There are little electronic motors in the arm, and the suit that constantly restabilize and absorb shock. Steadicam rigs are "powered".

  • mikey the pikie wrote on November 11, 10:38 am

You know thats not the only steady cam in the world. There is alot of different types at different prices. Check out a couple of these website below. Ones really cheap but probobly not all that effective and the other still pretty expensive but alot more reasonable than 8 grand.

  • jdh wrote on November 13, 7:36 pm

Anyone have other ideas for low cost film equipment?

  • dgeorgeNY wrote on November 19, 3:50 pm

Awesome until the test film. How can you have an $8,000 piece of film equipment with great camera and make little clips like that. Well, I guess it was just a demonstration.

  • arnchalooo wrote on November 28, 11:22 pm

How much of a difference is there between the $8,000 rig that you have and $2,600 Steadicam Merlin (now with vest and arm) or a $1,800 Glidecam 2000 Pro - Smooth Shooter Combination. Is the quality between the 3 rigs that noticeable or is it more of a distinction of "One is a more PRO-Looking rig than the other" kind of thing?

  • Shultze wrote on November 30, 3:44 am

If you want a basic steadicam rig there are tons of cheap non-powered systems out there. One setup would be the Flycam Steadicam stabilizer, mounted onto a padded supportvest by an articulating arm. The basic principles are the same as in the episode. You can pick up a complete setup (stabilizer, arm and vest) for like $4-500 on eBay, you could even get it for less if you look around and find the components one by one.

Weekend Extra: Steadicam Operator

Kyle Fasanella, steadicam operator, and curator of the famous VileKyle.com gives us a rare glimpse at how a steadicam works. Now we know $8, 000 is a lot of money (more than we've ever seen at once), but we think you'll really enjoy watching this...and who knows, maybe you'll break the piggy bank for one of these babies.
