did i just not notice a counterweight or was there no counterweight added to this?

  • jared wrote in reply on November 2, 11:52 pm

counterweighting will be addressed when we get to the "pimp my jib" episodes...
along with the axial pan/tilt add-on and the dolly we're gonna make for this crane. but you guys gotta wait (just like us. because i haven't made these things yet)

  • Paul (anon) wrote in reply on November 2, 11:53 pm

cool, and thanks for responding so quickly even if it's almost midnight. Can't wate for that episode now

  • Blu Mage wrote in reply on November 3, 9:46 am

Hey, Jared, how would you collapse the arm part? Because that seems really long and it looks like it would be really difficult to fit inside say...my four-door car.

Nice job, though! You're quite the handy man.

Now, I've actually made a proto-type sort of jib out of my tripod, monopod, and a wooden vice that would attach the tripod and the monopod together. It worked out pretty well. I may have to show you the video. I think you would get a kick out of it.

  • moviemansam89 wrote on November 2, 11:47 pm

  • Weker1 wrote on November 3, 12:27 am

  • Euro83 wrote on November 3, 2:38 am

really creative idea...the only downfall though is that you wont be able to tilt the camera angle at all though so once the camera is higher than the actor/actress you will lose them...but then the crane is only 80 dollars...and might i say for the job on what that can do...80 dollars is cheap

  • zebragrrl wrote in reply on November 3, 4:38 am

well, if you take out the bolt on the bottom board, then angling the back upright should angle the front upright to match.

It looks like a long and hard time to make, but it takes some pretty SWEET shots.

  • Blake (anon) wrote on November 3, 11:49 am

That was pretty awesome. It takes some practice to get the thing to work right but it sure works well. There are quite a few videos on YouTube of people using their cranes and lots of sites online about cranes and jib arms and making them for cheap and whatnot. Nice job guys. I love the last question in the test film. Nice one, Steve.

  • Esai93 wrote on November 3, 12:14 pm

With all the tension on the pivoting bolts (with bolts pounded through undersized holes) doesn't this contraption have a really high "squeak" and "shudder" potential? What kind of options are there for lubricating the joints to make the movement smoother/quieter?

  • Justinsuperstar wrote in reply on November 4, 2:04 am

Nope! It's actually silent for the large majority of the time.

  • Solo0312 wrote on November 4, 1:35 am

Dude I cannot believe you guys built a jib! And a decent one at that! So the next question is, if I'm too lazy to build my own then how much does it cost to rent :)

  • evgon wrote on November 4, 10:36 am

I started making this in separate parts (because I saw you are going to release modifications etc) and I was wondering if its possible to make an extendable piece making te base pole higher. I was thinking of using 4 1/2" thick pieces of wood for the base and make a hollow square out of them. Then drill holes every 1/2" or 1" on that piece and the fitting piece. Now, this wont change too much of the effect, but I think it would be very nice for fine tuning.

  • LogaFilms wrote on November 4, 12:31 pm

Hey guys, great episode. Could you make some build plans to go with it. Anyway, keep up the good work ;)

  • anonymous wrote on November 4, 2:03 pm

it really disappoints me to see you guys using auto focus.

    anyways,love the vid

  • radioactivestd wrote on November 4, 7:44 pm

It's a lot easier, (and lighter) to find an old speaker tripod. I picked one up for a couple bucks at a yard sale. Then you just build the crane part out of aluminum piping. Instead of a lazy suesan I spent the majority of my money to buy a hefty fluid head that I just bolted to the speaker tripod.

  • Daniel (anon) wrote in reply on November 5, 10:59 am

that's true, but a lighter jib also means it's more wobly

  • black jacket films wrote on November 4, 9:25 pm
