WOOT!!! FIRST!!!
hey! great vid! i was wondering if you guys were interested in makingstop motion models. it would go great with your upcoming episode, miniture cities! thank a bunch!!!
Oh, stop motion models would be cool.
Anyway, nice job! And $250 IS really cheap for film making. I spend more at a grocery store.
Another way you can get a decent film equipment without burning a hole in your pocket is pawn shopping. Yeah, I know it sounds weird and a bit unreliable, but if you know what you're shopping for you can find really nice cameras for about $100, and a tripod that sells for no less than dirt. More like $2.
And if that doesn't work...ask your grandparents. ^^
Get a haircut! :P
i need ithis vid tar
Allso SD cards are about to go down in price, at least the 1G and 2G ones, since The 8G is comming!
Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 6MP Waterproof MPEG4 Camcorder with 5x Optical Zoom Search that on amazon.com!
It looks awsome!

9th!
Good stuff here, really appreciate your ideas and tips! :)
While I do appreciate this video, I thought this was going to be something other than what It actually was... I think most people on this site already know they will need a decent video camera and tripod in order to start making their films. However - I think an episode on basic film making would be superb, Such things as "Making a decent dolly", "How to light certain scenes [whiteboards outside, etc" "What format is best to save in at optimal quality" "What is the best affordable HD camera out there" "How to make your movie look professional" Those are just some ideas, I'm sure lot's of people would like to know how to make their videos look professional before they start using some of these effects like "A giant laser weapon?!" - I think the Stunt Fight was a step in the right direction, but also very vague.
Keep up the good work!
In case no one has mentioned this before, you can get work lights at any hardware store for about 10 bucks. They look like your mom's metal bowls and they come in different sizes. They also clip anywhere for the filmaker on the run. I use 100 watt bulbs.
Well this video is good, but still slight rehash of what he said before. What is needed is for somebody, preferably indy mogul, to make a video, like 2 minutes or little longer (under 5 minutes) of different scenes, in FULL quality from this camcorder. THEN, we can take this and play it on our pcs and see for ourselves the quality. The thing for me at least, with me and friend writing a script for a full movie, is that we need it to be presentable on DVD. Now 640x480 isn't DVD resolution, it is 720x480, but very close. What I want to do is to take a REALLY good video from a camcorder like this, burn to a DVD and see how it looks on my tv. Some of us want to distribute our videos, or allow for download to DVD format. Maybe just me, but when it is "on DVD", it is an official movie.
Also like stated above, no more of "this is the $200 super cool camcorder" and leave it at that. SHOW us the techniques and everything, please. Show us how to use this camcorder and then with whiteboards, lighting etc. We NEED this. Good stuff, but more detail please.
Ok, they have officially run out of ideas for weekend extra. Gee, I have this stuff. Bought it a couple of years ago.
Starting to lose interest in the weekend extra...
Spaceye: Don't worry, we have some really cool Weekend Extras planned, PLUS an awesome new weekly segment. STAY TUNED!!!
first off. he better never stop saying "hey it's Alan K. for IndyMogul extra." the way he says it. it makes me laugh every time.
second, I really think John Smith and sandmanfvr
make an excellent point. I love IndyMogul but i think there should be more explanation in everything. Show us stuff. stretch it out. I've got time to watch. believe me.
What about that clicking sound in the video?
Well after doing a few hours research, I found these Sanyo camcorders ARE nice, the 5 and 6 series is higher quality video, but these camcorders HAVE NO MIC INPUT!!! Why recommend a camcorder, especially when you have a special on the $15 boom pole (and saying people are doing it wrong without a boom mic), and have a camcorder with NO mic input. The Canon ZR800 has gotten good reviews, it does widescreen, it is dv, and has a mic input. The price is $249 at walmart. Yes higher, but better in my opinion. Why don't you guys test it out?
I agree whole heartedly with John Smith. I know your show is called Backyard EFFECTS, but I think you should really get into the technique. Because if you don't have the techniques down, what good is the effect?
(hint: please please please do an episode on lighting...which can be considered an effect!)
im sorry but there is no way on earth that the quality on that is from that camera....it couldnt be could it??
coool
Where did he find that camera for $200?!?! The cheapest I can find it is $300!!! It's $500 on best buy!!!
These are all great points everyone. While I think BFX should stay centered around, fun, cheap special effects. These are great suggestions for Weekend Extra or possibly a whole new Indy Mogul show. When I say "Stay tuned we have cool new Indy Mogul stuff coming soon" I mean it. THANK YOU everyone who commented. This proves Indy Mogul is exactly what it should be...a community. You're talking and we are listening and learning.
I dunno if there's anywhere to post questions but what the heck, I'll do it here. I'm kinda new to the world of cameras, so I was wondering if any of you guys could see about this camera:
Aiptek GO-HD 720p Digital Camcorder - 5.0 Megapixel, 1280x720 Resolution, 3x Digital Zoom, 2.4 LCD
I heard this camera had no audio jack, so I thought about this one. Is it any good? I don't really want to spend more than $250 on a camera... Mine's 11 years old right now, lol.
Thanks all
John Smith is completely right. If you guys did some episodes on that it would be amazing. There are many other things you need for cheap film making that he didn't have though. A shotgun mic is a must! If you don't have one your audio will be complete crap. Other than that he did o.k.
thats a nice cam but there us one not quite expensive that i love you can get 30-60 minutes of filming on it and it has great picture! the flip video ! every easy to use and i love it!
Since Eric is reading these, glad you guys read these and LISTEN to us, can we get:
a forum?
I know you have to moderate it, etc, but a place to talk when we are in between BFX and Weekend Extra. If not now, then you know later on.
I checked Walmart next to me, they have the Sanyo C6, it is $299 and it and the C5 have higher quality video than the C40.
ERIC: Can you get a sample of the C40 video (FULL Quality) and put it here on the site so we can download and see how good it is? Thank you.
I, like most other people, lol, agree with John Smith. I'm still working on getting a camera, but it would be nice to learn some basic tricks of the trade (I. E. lighting, sound effects, camera angles, etc). I've made some preety darn basic movies (even with the 11 year oldy) but it would be nice to learn a few tips, not just effects. BUT DON'T QUIT DOING THE EFFECTS!!! THEY ARE STILL FRIGGIN' AWESOME!!!
Sorry, last question (I agree, a forum would be nice, lol) Since the sanyo c40, c5, and c6 don't have audio jacks, could I still use a mic and stream it into my video and cut the audio taken with the camera?
I vote yes on the idea of the forum... sounds like a good idea to me...

The HDDV-2500 does 720x480, WIDESCREEN, and that is dvd resolution. I found this on ebay for $150!! It does not have a mic in, like the Sanyo's, but with this increased resolution, it could be must better than the Sanyo's and more affordable. Just some more info on this topic.
Is it worth the $1,200 to get final cut studio 2?
hmm i dunno thats alot fo money mate.. it depends what you are gonna use it for if its minor videos for youtube that will probs get 1000 views in a year then mabe not but if ur like smosh or something then yes :) i dont know how rich you are or how old you are so i can not say
does this camera have external audio ports so i can use my boom mic and headphones with?
you look like crape but that isn't the cam's fault it's you
Nice video, but I think you could probably do it cheaper. For example, I got a Canon PowerShot A570IS for $150, a 2GB card for $20, and a tripod I got as a birthday gift. Just my two cents.
cool thanks i have needed a cheap tripod
