And same as the "disappearing" extra a few weeks back, you should set your exposure and focus to manual, rather than auto when you shoot this.

A variation I've used is to pan from one person on the left to that same person on the right, by cutting in the middle of the pan.
I use it right near the end of this video:

  • Arnar wrote on August 11, 5:31 pm

you can make one go behind the other by using masks, i like Adobe After Effects to do that. The Test Film was very good ;)

A tip on cloning-If you're moving around a lot Don't step in front of your lite source or one clip will get different lighting than the other and it won't look good and will be hard to fix

  • felix wrote on October 7, 3:59 pm

  • Munch wrote on October 8, 6:17 pm

Really loved this. Tried it out using Final Cut Pro, but I'm kinda stuck. When I split the clip and move one part into a new video layer, somehow it turns brighter than the original clip. What causes this? Any solutions?

    Again, amazing!

  • BooBooKittyF*** wrote on October 27, 9:16 am

  • Raxo wrote on October 28, 11:14 pm

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 12:56 pm

i'm sorry, but you can't do it with windows movie maker. i tried, read all the Help! things, and have watched enought tutorials to "make my brain want to eat itself(*Eric*)!"

  • datdude1988 wrote on March 10, 4:53 am

You can't do shit with Windows Movie Maker.

Stop being cheap or poor and just buy a new Mac.

  • Tommyyy wrote on November 27, 4:03 pm

    What Program you using?

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 12:52 pm

it was impressive when i watched Ryan Wieber (www.ryan-w.com) do that effect. But, this clip is the funniest one ive seen yet... Way 2 go, Steve!! Woo!! Steve Nelson: The Movie is the BEST movie of ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!** i think you should make a short film based off that test clip.

  • Hand-Me-Down Films wrote on February 25, 10:26 pm

I know this is an old episode but i think it might be relevant (i'll also put it in you latest episode on dialogue):
When it comes to doing the cloning effect I have to trouble, It's the Damn Dialogue! What I mean is HOW do you work out the Timing from between the two of you? I realize that you did quite a few cuts in the scenes. But, is there truly a way or technique to sinc up both your characters dialogue so they don't cross over each other? PLease help! I'm desperate! :P

  • loldude101 (guest) wrote on April 21, 10:59 am

    rock on

  • Dinoslayer wrote on October 10, 3:48 am

In case someone has a friend who looks similarly proportioned, they could fake yet another faceless clone in the same shot with the original to make some clones actually cross paths besides the masked ones. You could also use a composited head but that takes a program like After Effects and much hard work to make it seamless.

Weekend Extra: Cloning Effect

Steve Nelson brings you an awesome cloning effect to put yourself in a shot as more than one character. (Yes, like in multiplicity).
