  • Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Grenade Launcher

POSTED BY WESLEY SCOGGINS, OCTOBER 15 2008 11:38 PM | PERMALINK

Grenade Launchers, what do I have to say? When you really need to have your hero blow something up, and he doesn't want to actually take the time to throw a grenade. Seen in classic action films such as Terminator 2, it's a classic "heavy artillery" weapon. Here is one I created for less than 12 dollars that you could make for your own film.

I started with a trip to my local Supermarket, and found this break open toy cowboy gun for 10 dollars. This one came with a "boom"...

POSTED BY WESLEY SCOGGINS, OCTOBER 01 2008 11:31 PM | PERMALINK

A common prop from War movies landmines have been a part of a lot of tense and dramatic moments on many many war films. Now, i'm going to show you how to make a type of landmine today that you can fit into your film.

First, I started with a styrofoam ball that I purchased at my local hobby and craft store.

Then I cut it in two...

Then roughly marked where the pressure pins were going to be pushed into the foam.

I then pushed wooden dowels into the foam,...

  • Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Prop Chains

POSTED BY WESLEY SCOGGINS, SEPTEMBER 24 2008 10:36 PM | PERMALINK

This week is Chains. A very simple prop with a lot of uses, whether you want to have a dungeon scene and need to have some prisoners chained up, or if you want to restrain a monster onto a table, or even if you just want to make a movie about gangs and need a "street weapon" that you can wave around and stage a fight scene with, and have it not actually hurt people, then a prop chain could fit your needs.

Start out with a piece of cardboard, this is just something I cut off of a box...

  • Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Shrunken Head

POSTED BY WESLEY SCOGGINS, FEBRUARY 20 2008 01:16 PM | PERMALINK

This week, I am covering a recent request from the forums, Shrunken Heads!

Start with a foam ball same as with the ends of the fake bone from a few weeks ago.

Begin forming it into a vague human facial structure, it helps to maybe look up a few reference photos of shrunken heads and skeletal structures so you can start to get the basic anatomy right. But push in the sides, and the eye sockets, and pinch for the nose, and push in a little for the mouth, and you've got the basic shape ready.

    I...

  • Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Stabbing and Cutting Effect

POSTED BY WESLEY SCOGGINS, NOVEMBER 14 2007 06:49 PM | PERMALINK

A lot of you out there have been asking for stabbing and cutting tutorials for a while, so I've finally decided to throw you a bone and show you some very easy ways to make stabbing and cutting wounds for almost nothing.

For this build you will need:

A Nasal cleaning bulb for infants, and the straw from a certain delicious juice drink. (Mmmm.)

Most of these bulbs have rubbery tips that are the perfect size of most juice drink straws. Mine fit almost perfectly in, but since I want a liquid...

  • Bre of MakeZine's 1 Year Anniversary!

    POSTED BY , JULY 18 2007 11:37 AM | PERMALINK

Our partner in DIY, 'Weekend Projects,' just celebrated it's one year anniversary. This is especially cool since our podcast is so young, and it's good to see other folks doing the same sorts of stuff as us in it for the long haul. Since birthday candles are soooooo 1994, host and genius Bre Pettis created a 'Jam Jar Jet,' which is like a candle on PCP.

I'm sure there's some way to use this thing in a movie ... maybe if you made a model of a tiny jet and wanted it to look like it was...
