Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Easy to Make Gore

POSTED BY Wesley Scoggins, 29 October 2008

Here at Indy Mogul for Mogulween it's Zombie Week, and to celebrate, I am looking at even another way to produce some fake guts, and gore that you could easily utilize in a variety of ways. Everything from Zombie films, to War Movies, and Forensic Shows utilize fake gore, and who knows when YOU might need them. But these aren't just any guts and gore.. Since it's Halloween, i'll show you how to make some disgusting looking gore from a seasonal favorite...

That's right, this week I know many of us are carving Jack-O-Lanterns, and I thought I would show you how to put the goo within the Pumpkin to use in something else than a compost heap. The first step to this build, is obviously, crack open a Pumpkin. They are rather cheap and easy to find right now, but you could also reasonably replace the Pumpkin with perhaps Squash guts if you live in an area without easy access to Pumpkins (although, since it's the time of year for Pumpkins it shouldn't be that hard to find them).

Take the Pumpkin innards, and put them in a plastic bag (this is really helpful for a lot of reasons, which i'll explain in a second), then get some corn syrup and red food coloring. (If you want to make mammalian looking innards, if you wanted to make some alien looking ones, use maybe green food coloring or some other color that's unusual for an internal color.)

You can see how fibrous and slimey it looks, which is exactly what we want for gore.

In a test cup, I mixed some food coloring, and corn syrup...

And got this nice very vibrantly red mass. This shows off one of the reasons I like it, because the Pumpkin goo unevenly absorbs the dye, some spots are lighter than others, just like in real tissue, where fatty tissue is lighter color. Another thing I like about this is that you aren't simply trying to imitate something organic, because you're actually working with something that is actually organic.

Now comes the reason why I put it into a bag instead of a bowl, I can now mix the corn syrup and food coloring into my bag and seal it up.

Then shake it throughly, and there you are, a bag full of very organic fake gore.

They can now be used in all sorts of ways, if you want to simulate the effects of a bullet hit or another abdomenal wound, have your actor merely hold these in their hands and squeeze it against the wound. You could also easily put these in a plastic bag and tear it open and have them fall out, similar to my knife stab effect, only you're putting this stuff in the bag as well.

This stuff should keep for a very very long time, so even thought you can't get Pumpkin's year round, what you can do, is make a few bags of Pumpkin Guts, then put this stuff in your freezer, then when you finally get to making your Zombie movie in the spring, take this stuff out and thaw it out, and presto, instead bag of gore and guts for you to use!

You can also use the innards for sound effects, like zombies eating someones guts, in editing
