Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: HAZMAT Respirator

POSTED BY Wesley Scoggins, 25 June 2008

So you thought tossing your Plutonium Core around like a football was all fun and games until you broke it open on the pavement, and now you've got a major ecological disaster on your hands, and pesky EPA agents snooping around wondering what all of the giant insects are about, and you need to clean it up without mutating yourself? Well how about your very own Air Purification device, that won't cost you a chest full of stolen Nazi gold.

I started out with this "Comfort Mask" I found, that has a basic filter in the core, and this nice molded rubber exterior. Its a much better base to work with than a normal paper mesh mask, and is 30 dollars cheaper (at $5 dollars) than the cheapest real respirator mask I found at my local hardware store.

Then, I got this plastic dixie cup.

And cut off the very bottom of the cup, epoxying it to the top of the mask. Mask sure it dries throughly before you put it on, you don't want to be breathing in epoxy fumes.

This flat part gives me a base to attach this PVC coupling to, that can act as a "breathing valve".

That I can then attach some plastic tubing to.

I got this digital clock on sale for 5 dollars, you could probably find a cheaper one at a flea market or a thrift store, especially older bulkier ones (that actually might look better for this build).

For this box, i'm going to want to hang it on myself, so i'm going to have to make a shoulder strap. So I pulled out about 8 feet of duct tape...

And folded it down the middle.

Then epoxied it on the box.

And there you go, insta-strap.

I then attached another PVC coupling to the top of it with more epoxy.

I then, gave the mask a paintjob with some gray acrylic paint.

And did the same for the "respirator box".

Then just attach the hose, and there you go, a real looking prop respirator. This could be used for crime scenes, fake chemical spills,, war scenes, sci-fi scenes (you could even go with a full head covering, similar to Erik's Space Helmet design), or anytime where your characters might need some kind of breathing protection, yet you don't want to shell out the $30-$100 dollars necessary to get a real one.

See you next week with a new tutorial!

Good Job Wess. I just made something kinda like this using an old gas mask and your night vision goggle idea for the fighter pilot masks for a sci-fi thing I'm working on for your 5min movie house!

AH! I love this! It reminds me of the one Bruce Willis and company use in Planet Terror.

  • WesScog wrote on June 26, 2:30 pm

Exactly! I just need to modify a timer on this one, and i'm all set to mutate horrifically.

looks good, but i see you dont have you glasses on in the pic of you wearing it. does it not fit well with glasses. if so some people have might have to find a different style mask...but it does look good keep up the good work

  • WesScog wrote on June 28, 2:25 pm

No, it fits fine with glasses, I had just take them off so I could more easily slip the mask over my face, and I had forgotten to put them back on.

  • FloppySauce wrote on June 29, 3:31 pm

    awesome!

  • SJPO (guest) wrote on June 28, 1:19 pm

If you can't find a mask then you can use the cap end of a 2 litre milk bottle.
