Dare 2 Direct Contest

POSTED BY Wesley Scoggins, 21 June 2008

ChillerTV, is currently running a contest for horror shorts, 3-6 minutes long. They are offering $5,000 each for the winners in three catagories, Best Picture, Best Make-up/Costume, and Creepiest Character. A synopsis of the rules are below:
Here's a handy overview of things you'll need to know about Chiller's Dare 2 Direct Short Film Contest. It's not a substitute for the official rules, which you must read and agree to. It's just, you know, handy.
  • Your film MUST be between three and six minutes in length. No longer. No shorter. We don't want any quivering bottom lips. Make sure you can tell your story within that window.
  • Need music? Tracks are available as part of our Toolbox of Terror. Coming Soon. (ADDITION: Until they get the extra stuff added to their Toolbox, you could most likely get permission to use the music submitted by people here are the Indy Mogul Community for use in your own projects, check out the thread here.)
  • Submissions must be postmarked between June 2nd and July 28th. All submissions must be received by August 4th.
  • Make sure you have permission to use the locations, appearance and property of others in your film (including artwork, TV and film clips, trademarks and music), or that you are otherwise allowed to use them. It's a good idea to get this permission in writing. Chiller has posted some sample contracts that may be helpful to you, but you don't need to use these, and you're free to use something else that works better for you. Chiller's sample forms may not satisfy your needs or the law in your area, so please check with an attorney. Chiller isn't providing you legal advice by giving you these forms, and won't be able to answer any questions about them for you. For sample contracts, click here.
  • Your film must be in one of the following formats: MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV(1080i), Beta SP, DigiBeta, HDCAM videotape, CD-ROM data disk, DVD-R data disk (with quicktime .mov), Video disk (Video_TS folder), HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. The submitted format should be color corrected to adhere to CCIR-601/ITU-R 601 NTSC broadcast specs, have peak audio levels between -10db and -8db, and have an aspect ratio of either 16:9 or 4:3.
  • Mail your film, signed Dare 2 Direct rules, and signed contracts to:
  • Chiller
    3000 W. Alameda Avenue
    P-600
    Burbank, CA 91523-2000

  • You will receive an e-mail from Chiller letting you know if your film has been approved.
  • Make sure to read our Fearful Filmmaking 101 primer. It's got lots of useful creative advice. You're kind to small animals and children—why not be nice to the people who sit through your movie? It's available here.
  • If your film is approved, it will be uploaded to our Web site. Online voting begins September 2nd. Finalists will be contacted October 7th.
So there you go, visit the official website, read the rules, and get your stuff to them before August 4th. Good luck guys, I know we have a lot of great filmmakers in the community, and I feel confident that Mogulers could win all the prizes this year, don't let me down!

Dirty Mother Fuckers!!! Every time I get all hyped up about one of these contests, I read the rules and it's only for people in the US!! People live on the rest of the fucking planet! Maybe we'd like to enter a competition now and then! Fuckers!!

So look for a contest in YOUR country, Shannmanlives.

I'd also calm downa bit-- ik how frustrating that is but, mind your language. We're not all older people here.

Do you have any friends or relatives in the United States that could possibly assist you in being a go-between, or creative partner that could submit it for you?

  • DoctorWho wrote on June 30, 2:48 pm

Yes because me, an eleven year old was very excited to see your comment.

Question, i've read everything but am confused-- does EVERYONE in the production need to be 18, or only the man/woman submitting it? B'Cuz i know someone of 18 who would submit it, but I myself am only 17. 18 in January :(

No, like I said, it looked like there was a few characters in the shorts who were under-aged, and a narrator that definitely was under-aged. I think just get a parental release form to send in with the film, and it should be fine.

I agree with Shannmanlives, i live in the UK and am totally pissed off that i can't enter cos i don't live in the US, also i'm hardly within the age range, i'm 14 but would be working with older people like i do in some of my movies....i was really excited about this though so that sucks really

You have a short film contest called CUT. Same prizes, same timeline, pretty much same everything.

  • khamelion wrote on June 23, 5:57 pm

bit sad that this is a US only contest, i had a movie idea i could have used. i dont know of any UK competitions apart from that doritos thing a few months back.

If you have any family or friends in America, just bring them on as a producer in the credits, and get them to submit it.
