Wesley's Weekly Presents... Fake Mustaches

POSTED BY Wesley Scoggins, 17 June 2008

I am out of town this week and unfortunately unable to put together an effect due to circumstances beyond my control (or at least unable to put together an effect that wasn't poop), but as always the Indy Mogul community saw fit to assist me and our very own Arissa Beck, arose to the challenge, and defeated it with a mighty broadsword, so I present to you for your edujoyment, Fake Mustaches...

Fake Reusable Mustaches
BY: Arissa Beck

We all have come to love fake mustaches thanks to the Indy Mogul crew. Mustaches have almost become a staple to the filmmaker in helping achieve that bit of comedy or just simply to look older. Some of us are unable to grow cool ‘staches whether it be gender or age. So today I’m going to teach you how to make your own fake reusable mustaches because sometimes electrical tape just doesn’t cut it.

Supplies:
Crepe hair
Scissors
Liquid Latex
Tulle
Mannequin Head/ Model
Hair straightener/ Iron

Cut your tulle fabric netting down into a basic rectangle shape. I bought the closest color to my skin as possible which happens to be a light pink. This stuff is cheap and will last you forever. I bought a quarter or a yard for just 24 cents.

Next you want to cut your rectangle into more of a mustache sort of shape. You can cut it to any shape your mustache lovin’ heart desires. I went with a simple and the most common mustache shape.

Grab your mannequin head and use a clear drying liquid latex to apply it. If you don’t have a fancy mannequin head you can use a foam head or even a patient human head for your model.

While you’re waiting for the latex to dry, straighten your crepe hair. If you can’t burrow your Mom’s hair iron, just a simple iron for clothing will work as well on a low setting.

After the latex has dried use a thin tool or a pencil to apply a thin line of latex.

Cut your crepe hair and then begin apply it gently into the line of latex.

When that line is dry, add another layer. This is going to take some patience and some practice.

More layers and patience!

When you’ve finished the layering and waited for all of the layers to dry, you can start trimming your mustache into shape.

When you’ve got a basic shape of a mustache trimmed, SLOWLY pull the mustache back.

When it’s off you can cut the mustache into a more desirable shape.

Then apply with some spirit gum or liquid latex, add some cool accessories and be the envy of the neighborhood.

Great tutorial, Arissa. I usually used the knotting-technique with real hair on tule, but latexing crepe hair on is also a good (bit faster and easier) idea.
