Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Prehensile Tentacle

I am finally back this week, with a build that a few of you requested and that I was pretty excited about tackling. A fully prehensile wire based tentacle, that can curl and sway.

Get some heavy twine like you would use for a kite, and put a weight on the end of the string, like this..

I found it helpful to color-code the threads so you know which string pulls on which side of the tube.

And stretch it over the tube...

Stretch it as far as you can down the tube, and duct tape it to as far as you can go, for bigger tubes, find the biggest size of pantyhose you can find.

After I got it secured, I painted the top dark green, and the bottom..

I painted the bottom a lighter color to make it look more like a real octopus tentacle. If you wanted to use this same build for an elephants trunk, of a tail for like a dragon or another larger costume, it wouldn't be hard to modify it.
You could easily spackle it with liquid latex to give it a more fleshy look, or texture it with more paints to make it a little more organic and realistic looking, and if you wanted to make it into an elephant trunk you could paint it grey. If you want suckers on it like an octopus you could add PVC couplings or even see if you can find rubber suction cups at your local hardware store that you could glue too it.
You could easily modify this for a lot of purposes, so just mess around with it and see what you can do with it.
