Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Scars and Stitches
Last week when I completed the burn tutorial, the question of "scars" came up, and while we've covered all sorts of wounds, we haven't covered a lot of "healed" wounds yet, so I thought this week would be a good opportunity to tackle the idea.

Start out by cleaning the area, and apply liquid latex in the shape of the scar.

It's a LITTLE hard to see in this picture (thank you WHITE BALANCE!), but I started with a layer of flesh toned paint (slightly pink).

I added more white and red highlights to try to bring the scar out a little, then..

I teased the latex up a little bit with a paperclip to give it kind of a "wrinkly" texture, and there you go, with a little more blending it could be a very convincing scar. I wanted to offer a little extra this week, STITCHES.

Once again, hard to see in this one, but for the stich wound, I spread out a strip of liquid latex and I let it dry.

After it dried, I cut a slit in the middle, and painted it a fleshtone with some make-up.

After it dried, I attached it to the spot where my stitches are going to be, blending it into my skin with more flesh colored make-up.

For the "stitches", I got a strand of fishing line, and rubbed some black acrylic on it to make it visible.

Then I cut the strand into stitch sized pieces...

Which I attached to the stitch strip with a drop of liquid latex. For the blood in the center of the wound I mixed dark red and brown paint into the crevice.

I did this 6 more times, dipping one end of the stitch into the liquid latex and sticking them on one side of the stitch.

And after they dried, I added drops of liquid latex along the otherside, sticking them to the wound.

I then blended the latex drops, with additional make-up, and there you go, a very simply stitch wound for almost nothing. You could easily substitute stapels for the stitching if your film calls for that instead.
You could also do a tighter slit in the center of the stitch prosthetic for maybe a little more 'realistic' stitching.

i would add a little more red and pink for irritation on the outside of the wound and a deeper color inside of the stitched one. .. but overall nice cheap effect ..
looks good, i totally needed this. Thanks.
Looks like a freshly stitched wound to me, great job W.
Looks nice! Although you made a bit of an "Uh-oh" with the blending on the stitched up scar.
Really cool, though! I'm definitely going to use this.
That's really cool. Simple and cheap too!
I will use this one in the future, but can the stitch be reused anywhere? or will it stretch out?
