Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Gold Bars

You guys have been requesting a lot of effects related to how to make fake treasure, specifically how to make fake Gold Bullion, so I thought I would show you how to make some gold bricks on the cheap!
First, start with our old friend foral foam, it's cheap, and easy to cut and shape without needing any real specialized tools (besides what you can find in your kitchen).
Now, cut it down to size. I wanted to go with an bullion shape because it's easily recognizable as a typical "gold" shape from a distance, but you could easily go with thinner bricks (that are also really common), and have that work too, and get more bricks out of the foam square too, but I decided to go with this.
Now after smoothing and shaping the brick to your liking, take a pointed object (I used the tip of a mechanical pencil), and "draw" the stamp into the top of the bar. It's easy to find photos of real bars to see what kind of information is stamped on top, but I just went with a generic "GOLD" and a stamp of it's purity and weight, which are often what's printed on the top of bars.
Take a brush, and brush the letters out, this gets the debris out of them and helps them look deeper.
I started with a base-layer of "Antique Gold", it's a little darker, and I want the base-layer to be darker for the lettering.
Then I went over it with a shinier "Metallic Gold" color. I would do this a few times to help build up a smooth gold layer, and you might even want to lacquer it when you're done with a nice shiny layer to make it really look smooth and sparkly.
Put a few more layers, and scratched into the lettering a little more, and it's nice and shiny. NOW it's just a matter of miming the weight of it, remember when you pick it up that it's supposed to be HEAVY, so ACT like it has weight. If you make it big enough, it might even be worth it to cut a hole in the bottom and fill the core with sand, or an actual metal weight, to help you a little. Dealing with gold in movies is half the weight of it, to really sell that you've got an actual heavy gold brick.
There you go! Good luck!
