Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Utility Belt

Yea, after a long hiatus, I am back. Sorry for being gone so long, the beginning of the year is always pretty hectic for me, but I am back this week with a next effect. A cheap and basic utility belt, for your Superhero Costume. Even though we covered how to make the actual costume, I thought covering how to make a basic utility belt would be worthwhile for all of the aspiring filmmakers out there, that want to have their very own superhero running around in their own film.

I started with a basic work belt that I got at the hardware store. It's nice and wide, so it has the strength to hold anything you may attach to it, and it keeps with the wider size that is typical for utility belts.

I went to work giving it a two-tone color scheme, black and yellow, kind of like Batman, but really you can do any color. A lot of superheros have a two-tone color scheme, so just balancing that with your own superhero design, whatever your color scheme is will work here. I just used acrylic paint here, it takes a while to even it out, so it might be helpful to start with a primer layer, so you have a more even color to start out with to begin with, especially if your color is a very light color like yellow.

Next, I got some utility holsters and pockets that I found at the store. If you wanted to be super cheap, you could possibly go with some plastic bags attached to the belt, from a distance they might work if they are painted a single color, but I think that these work pretty well, and I spent under 10 dollars for a whole package of these velco and zipper pockets. (Another idea: Cigarette and Gum boxes might also work here, so you might want to experiment with that.)

The zipper pockets came with this little clip, but it's only on one side, so they droop off your belt.

I cut a couple of slits in the back of the pocket, that allows me to run something through the back to attach the otherside.

I ran a strip of duct tape through the back, then wraped it around the belt, acting as a loop attaching it to the belt.

And then it's just a matter of doing a little touch-up, and there you go, a simple and cheap utility belt for your own superhero costume.
