Indy Mogul Week In Review
Sorry the last Indy Mogul Week in Review was a week late, but at least you get two this week. Try and contain your excitement. Anyway, this week featured a bit of a drop off in the amount of violence on display, which is nice for our countries future, but not good when you need to write a funny blog. Whether it's violent or not, send us more submissions, since there is a greater than 50% chance you'll either make it on the show (yea right) or in this blog (much more likely). This week there was a lot of great material, not all of which we can post, but we'll have some other links at the bottom. There was some more sophisticated filmmaking we got to watch this week including a friendship video that really nailed (that was on purpose) the platonic relationships some of us have been in. Here they are...
Friendship by Ben King--I'm not sure how much experience anyone has being in the friend zone, mine is rather limited since women never want to sleep with me or be friends, but this surreal take on the Friend Zone is an excellent piece. Be weary of the platonic relationship guys. Ben King had three excellent submissions that I didn't have time to put in here, but might roll over to next week.
The Shadowy Orchard-Jeremy Cathey--The claim before the video that Jeremy doesn't normally shoot this kind of video makes me wonder what sort of video he does shoot. Please tell me in the comments because this was great.
Teleportation-Tyler--Try and align your nifty hand movements (I guess signifying a coming teleportation), with the actual teleportation. There was enough of a lag to make the effect [sic] look off. Send us another one.
Floating Object Tutorial-Ethan Nelson--I totally hung out with kids like Ethan in middle school, and I was always amazed at all the bric a brac they had. Double sided tape, plexiglass, A PENCIL! All kidding aside, great tutorial Ethan, and the next time I watch 2001: A Space Odyssey I will amaze my friends with the secret behind the special effects wizardy (their amazement will probably be compounded by the ingestion of magic mushrooms, but that's another story).
Distractions-Sarah--This was shot well, but you totally tricked me into thinking this was going to be about the normal ways people are distracted from writing papers: a movie on television, parties, someone wants to sleep with you etc. This was quite the pastoral romance and looked really good (kudos on finding someone that actually looked like a knight for the scenes in the woods). I liked the story and it was done well, so keep sending them in Sarah.
Will Goodwin-Curiosity Killed the Cat--This personifies what these videos should do. I actually hate cats (sorry to all the cat lovers out there), so watching this horror video short was a sick pleasure for me. The timing of the cut-a-ways from the phone conversation back to the microwave were great and definitely built the tension nicely. Also, the acting was superb when the remnants were found. The only point of contention I can make (because I'm such a stickler for realism) is the noises. If a cat were to be microwaved, theoretically, the explosion would happen sooner, and the "meows" would cease almost instantly. I get that the urgency of the situation called for an increase in the level of the cat sounds thus creating tension, but it didn't ring true for me. Sorry to dissect a fun little horror short, but I've actually contemplated throwing my friends cat into the microwave, so I'd want it to be as realistic as possible without actually killing a cat (if you hadn't already guessed it, I'm allergic to cats).
The best of the rest
Patrick Robinson-Star Wars 10 second fan film
Caz Voorhees Barde Machine Gun
If your video wasn't featured, I'm sorry we missed it, so send it in again, and I will try to get as many on there for next week's write-up. There is a backlog of submissions, but in due time, I will try to feature them all. Have a good weekend, and keep filming.
