Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Cartoonish Raygun

While we've done our fair share of Rayguns, Death Rays, and Laser Cannons in the past, I have gotten some requests from a few Mogulers for a more "cartoony" looking Raygu, and thought i'd build one today for cheap.

First for the primary gun body, I started with an empty 2 Liter bottle of soda.

I cut it with my xacto knife about half of the way down. To smooth out the edges a little (since it's hard to get a real even cut), I used a pair of scissors and just wittled down the edges a little bit.

Trace a line around the bottom of the bottle on some cardboard or foamboard, then cut it out.

Don't get to concerned if it isn't a perfect circle, you can fill in any gaps or anything like that that you get.

Now just fit it inside of the gun "body". After you've done that, poke a hole through the center of it and put a wooden dowel through the center and out through the bottle top. Lock it in place with epoxy.

For the grip, instead of making my own, I am just going to cannibalize this squirt gun I got a the dollar store. I cut it in half with a dremel, and opened it up for combining with the gun "body".

Now it's just a matter of filling in the gaps, and smoothing out the edges with epoxy. (I also took a bit of clay, rolled it into a ball and added it to the end of the beam antenna.) Now just let everything set, and it's ready for the paintjob.

Just took my foam brush, and built up layers of red paint (or whatever color you want), letting it dry inbetween. Be careful about using a hairdryer to try to help speed up the drying, as it can easily warp the very thin plastic of the gun body. Then it's just a matter of painting the "dish" on the front yellow, and there is your cartoonish looking raygun.
