Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Magic Wand

In keeping with the spirit of this week, I thought I would go ahead and do a simple effect that i've gotten a TON of requests for. How to make your own Magic Wand prop.

Start with a wooden dowel and something to use for the handle. I got this foam cylinder at my local craft store, and I like it because I can shape it and make holes in it without any tools more complicated than a screwdriver, so just for simplicity I like it, but if you wanted you could use a larger wooden cylinder as well.

After cutting off a piece of the foam cylinder, I hit each side against my table a few times to flatten out both ends, then got a screwdriver and just poked a hole in the end.

I then put some hot glue into the hole, and pushed the dowel in.

I then carved the handle down with a knife, but it's still not small enough.

So using my fingers and hitting it with a hammer to mold it, I smoothed it out a little, and brought its size down a little more. Now, if you want some detailing on it, you can carve into it's surface with whatever design you want. If you're in a well ventilated area (I don't know if the foam you get will give off fumes or something, be careful!) You can carve indentions into it with the hot tip.

Now for the paint job, I layed down a reddish-brown to try to make it look a bit more like wood.

Then I went in and did some gold detailing on the handle, and there you go, let it dry, and you've got your own cheap, easy, and simple wand.
