Wesley's Weekly HOW TO: Webbed Fingers

Here I am back for 2009, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Well I return to the blog with a request from the vaults. WEBBED FINGERS, one of our older requests, it can be applied to everything from Vampires or bat-people, to all sorts of half-aquatic people (or whatever other mutants you come across in your filmmaking journey). Yes, I do indeed remember BFX's own FISH MAN TUTORIAL that was undertaken for Mogulween, but the focus was definitely on the more complex part of the build, THE MASK. While most of you were more than happy with it (I was), I thought I would delve into Webbed fingers more for those of you still hungry for the effect.

First, take your hand, and spread your fingers out as wide as you can, on a flat surface.

And sketch out the shape of the space between your fingers on whatever surface you're working on. (You might want to use the same color as whatever you want to color your hand, so if you want to keep it flesh colored, you might want to use pink or a light brown.

Now take liquid latex and dab it inside the borders you drew.

Do that for a couple of layers, while hitting it with a hair dryer inbetween.

After you get the layers put down, dab around the edges over the line. This is going to be important because you want a nice thin "lip" around the edge of where you're going to attach it to your hand. It will blend together more easily with a thin lip, and have a less visible seam. After these dry, dust them, and you can peel them up.

After they are peeled up, I hit them with some flesh colored make-up, to start getting them the right color.

I then coated the outside of my fingers with a thin layer of liquid latex.

I then applied the webbing between my fingers, and layered additional liquid latex on top of it to further coceal the seam.

And kept repeating the process between each finger.

Do some touch-up work with the make-up along the seams, and there you are, a simple webbed finger effect that you can use for your own film.
