Great tips, although I don't see what a contra zoom really does... :P

  • bridboyross wrote on October 19, 5:31 pm

yer the contra zooom didnt really come out that well on the film, try it on your camera though and you'll see that it can give a good effect, just play around with it and you can make all sorts of cool fx like in fellowship of the ring and poltergeist, or more normal ones like Jaws.

  • ericanxiety wrote on October 19, 5:53 pm

this dolly in while panning out is used in Goodfellas (I think its Goodfellas) as well. the use of it is to subtlely show tension in the character

  • ericanxiety wrote on October 19, 5:54 pm

see my other comment, it is used in movies like Jaw, Goodfellas to show that the character is undergoing tension

  • zebragrrl wrote on October 20, 3:22 am

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_zoom

Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock in "Vertigo"

Development of the effect is originally attributed to Paramount Pictures second unit cameraman, Irmin Roberts

it works both ways. you can "zoom out while dollying in" to separate the character from the background, and can "zoom in while dollying out" to compress the depth of field. If well executed, you may not notice any movement in the shot, and the effect can be very slow and subtle.

It's used a lot in drama films, ususally right before the bomb explodes, or the hero notices the bomb or villan or the clue that reveals the truth.

  • zebragrrl wrote on October 20, 3:28 am

here's examples from Jaws, and Goodfellas, and I think from Vertigo and/or Final Cut.

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 10:52 pm

it makes it look like the background is stretching around the actor.

    Excellent "contra zoom" video birdboyross!

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 10:53 pm

ill have to agree with angrybudda...

  • moviemansam89 wrote on October 19, 5:51 pm

it makes the background look like it's getting closer or farther away while keeping the actor in the same place.

  • deadbydawn wrote on October 19, 6:22 pm

I'm really glad you guys did something on camera composition great show. Informative and Riveting as usual great job Indy Mogul \m/

As soon as i actually get around to making a movie... I'll be using lots of stuff off this site, especailly these audio, shot composition, and other great vids. :D

  • BOTL wrote on October 19, 7:25 pm

Great video! I think the first film to use the "Contra Zoom" effect was Vertigo. My friend showed it to me a year ago, and he says some people call it a "zolly" (meaning zoom/dolly), and in a film class I took, a bunch of people called it a "Vertigo". I've never heard it be called a "Contra Zoom" though.

what animation program do you use to make the opening title of 'bfx'. you know the thing that spins around and @!$?

  • CTrax wrote on October 21, 12:10 am

Ha, ha. Steve fall down and go 'boom'. Anyway, great vid - I like that you guys are moving into more of the basics of filmming and not simply effects. Like makeup and my aunt Gretchen's facial hair, good sfx can't cover an ugly film.

  • CTrax wrote on October 21, 12:11 am

... or any fx for that matter...

  • Dave G. wrote on October 21, 4:03 pm

Thank you for posting all these tips great and tricks. It's like Monty Python teamed up with Bob Vila!

I am a Chief Photographer at a small NBC News affiliate in Texas. You have no idea how difficult it is to teach complete newbies in the art of match-editing, tight, medium and wide shots, and so on and so forth. Your work here is a public service.

    Trust me.

The book that taught me the most on this subject was the "5 C's of Cinematography".

Sure, the book was written in the 60's and it has dated references sprinkled throughout, but the language of filmmaking is pretty much the same as it has been since silent film was the next new thing.

Thanks again for your great site! Keep up the great work.

  • Roel wrote on October 25, 4:46 am

I might sound a little creepy for knowing this but porno came before sound.

The first known pornofilm was made less than a week after the lumiere brothers started selling their camera's.

It is called the clown and the nun and its about a clown who asks a nun if she wants to play whit his carrot.
