my thoughts exactly. but remember, it is on the internet, so you can't expect too much.

  • tommy012345 wrote in reply on May 13, 2:02 pm

instead of doing a sniper episode - you should do a weapons episode - old and futuristic weapons

  • Ben (guest) wrote in reply on June 23, 12:52 am

Yeah, x2 crap. Learn to use 35mm adapters before you tell others to get them. BTW, Letus is inferior to Redrock and Brevis35

You could have elaborated a little bit on ready-made adapters are available... The 4 major ones which are the Letus Extreme, SGpro, Brevis and the RedRock M2. The M2 being the worst of the bunch!

  • Hat wrote in reply on May 11, 12:56 pm

And why would the M2 be the worst...?

  • toppie34 wrote on May 9, 5:42 pm

cool i love it good ep (do i need to say more ??)

  • uhrisuh wrote on May 9, 5:46 pm

That episode was incredible! 35mm adapters are amazing. And you know what else is amazing .. Jared's longhorn skull, that thing is so badass.

  • JadeMunky wrote on May 9, 6:02 pm

That's cool. Is there anything Jared doesn't know? Did he learn that stuff at school or does it come with the mean as mustache?

  • Hank (guest) wrote on May 9, 6:45 pm

Yea Ive been looking at these for some time now. The letus looks like the one for me, it has a built in flip mechanism. You cant argue that the results are just absolutly incredible. Also people you should check out some uncompressed footage out there, cause Ive seen much better results than even in this episode, which wasnt bad by the way.

2 things you guys forgot to mention when shooting with an adapter is

    1) you loose your zoom control, your camera lesns is focusing on a ground glass inside the adapter so no more zoom capabilities

    and

    2) the image is flipped upside down. So that will make framing a shot more difficult. You can mount an external monitor upside down to overcome that. But the new Panasonic HPX170's that will be coming out I think in the fall have an auto flip control so that will slove that. Anyone thinking about an HVX might want to hold off for the new HPX. Hopefully Indy Mogul will review that badass camera when it's released.

  • Hank (guest) wrote on May 9, 6:46 pm

I should point out what I meant with the letus's auto flip mechanism is that with the letus you will see the image correctly in your LCD/view finder. None of the other adapters have that built in.

  • steve nelson wrote in reply on May 9, 6:53 pm

We actually did mention the flip in the episode, but you can only fit so much in 4 minutes! Thanks for bringing it up though! It's definitely something to know about the adapters.

  • Weker1 wrote in reply on May 9, 10:49 pm

Steve For bit's like that you should put them on the vimeo page, as kinda an Extra feture thing, I'm sure theres tons of those little bit's cut out of every show!

  • Dave Seger (guest) wrote on May 9, 6:48 pm

Awesome Episode, guys. I might buy a Letus now. I dunno. I also need a new car. Can you do a tutorial on where to find a cheap reliable car?

  • Weker1 wrote in reply on May 14, 4:56 pm

police and city auctions, get to know some one cause often times perfectly good cars go cheep, for instance my dad use to work in frankfort , Ky for the state and there was a perfectly good truck but the only problem was it's paint was dead, but it worked perfectly, it went for under a grand, WTF?!!?
Now you being in callie I doubt you'll find a smokin deal like that(higer price things) truck.
but it's still worth a look i bet.

  • Andreas Climent (guest) wrote on May 9, 7:21 pm

    There is also the RNG35-adapter - http://www.rng35.com/

  • Dan (guest) wrote on May 9, 7:31 pm

My short film DOWNSIZED was shot on an HVX-200 with a P&S Technik adapter. This adapter does do the flip the image thing. We rigged the LCD with a mirror to overcome this. Not the best way to do it, but we hadn't rented an Israeli arm (the attachable monitor used to overcome this) so we had to improvise. Watch the trailer to get a glimpse at the footage from the short: http://www.vimeo.com/770285

Cool Job, And it feels like we havnt seen Justin in forever!
Is it just me or has he been missing lately?!?

  • Twisted_detsiwT (guest) wrote on May 9, 9:05 pm

The best adapter on the market is the P+S Technik pro35! It'll probably set you back $4000 but then you get what you pay for at the end of the day. Alternatively you could just hire one from a local rental store. Either way the Redrock sucks, it has major focusing issues and light spillage (if used on a fixed lens camera). Also, you really need to use an adaptor with a ground glass mechanism (like the pro35) if you have ambitions of making 35mm prints, otherwise it's welcome to grain-sville! Obviously if you're only making a backyard movie then you don't really need a 'film look', although if it's really that important to you, I suggest you invest in a 16mm Bolex camera! It's cheaper than an adaptor and you get the film look you crave. The only down side is getting your stock transferred to tape. So go retro folks if you want the 'film look' cheap.

Are we going to see more of the cop, or is he just another random guy in a video?:l

  • youngspeildberg wrote on May 9, 10:50 pm

That would be awesome to have. My camera has a 37mm adapter; what does that mean?

  • screamingdeathpunchpictures (guest) wrote on May 9, 10:50 pm

  • Androom05 wrote on May 10, 6:28 pm

OH! About your question of how zooming in helps the depth of field, Justin of IndyMogul; if you are zoomed in or not the depth of field doesn't change, what happens is when you ZOOM in the blurry objects in the background are magnified, thusly, creating the illusion of shallow depth of field. I learned that from a cool article from da net. :o I believe there is an Instructable, on how to make a macro lens adapter for your camera, which is really close to a 35mm lens kind of, and a hoot of alot cheaper.

  • datdude1988 wrote on May 10, 7:57 pm

Maybe it's just me but this episode was a little bland.

Not as entertaining as ones in the past but I guess it's not about that. It's about the education soooo... Great job.

  • New Republic (guest) wrote on May 10, 9:41 pm

A nice way to fake a shallow DOF is bringing your footage into after effects, and make two layer, one over the other. Rotoscope your foreground elements, and actors on the top layer, then apply a box blur to the lower layer. It takes a little tweeking to get it right, and your roto needs to be pretty tight, but it's cheap, and looks passible.

  • lordhazzard wrote in reply on May 11, 6:55 am

I'm doing a massive green screening project nad im going to create a cgi background, then all i have to do is blur the bottom layer a bit

wow that looked great, and i really liked some of the lighting you used it was very artistic looking

  • Hat wrote on May 11, 1:01 pm

My only gripe with the adapters is they give too much depth of field sometimes...rather, a lot of the time. Sometimes it's too easy to tell you're using one.

  • steve nelson wrote in reply on May 11, 4:32 pm

Hat - Well, the depth of field has a lot to do with which lenses you choose and the settings you choose (aperture, shutter speed, etc. ). The D.O.F. in the shots of me as I interview Justin is very subtle, and looks very nice.

  • Max (guest) wrote on May 11, 4:45 pm

$200 to build!? I built one for $20! I'm not kidding! All you need is a focusing screen, some lens caps, PVC pipe, and a 35mm lens.

  • dizzy wrote on May 11, 4:50 pm

i would definitely like to see a bfx or something on how to build one of these adapters . all the tutorials i see are kinda hard to follow. bfx to the rescue! help me out. i already got a 35mm lens and everything!

  • Max (guest) wrote in reply on May 11, 4:52 pm

If weekend extra still existed, I would totally make an episode on ways to make DIY 35mm adapters. I've made one for free before. (Of course, it doesn't look as good as a +$1000 one, but you get what you pay for)

Nice intro to 35kits :) I used an Fx1 with a SGPro kit while filming a documentary this last summer, http://www.sgpro.co.uk/, I can't even tell you how much I love the results! We had a handful of lenses with us and it dramatically changed the look of the film. We also had a Z1u, which was used as is.

You can see some of the footage here http://www.vimeo.com/692973, at the :45 mark - and there's also a lot of HDV35 shots here http://www.vimeo.com/610377, at the 6:00 area :)

The links are all in 720p HD, so they'd look great if you wanted to use them in the next episode. I'd be very, very flattered! Go Indy Mogul! :)

I found the cheapest way to shorten DoF for that "film" look is shoot through nuetral density filters; the decreased light will open the aperture decreasing the DoF. Much cheaper and way less complicated, my cam doesnt have aperature control, like a lot of cheaper cams, so I just trick it.

big f stop (f22)= tiny aperature = long depth of field
small f stop(1.4) = big aperture = short depth of field

    peace out boyscouts!

  • bikefilms wrote on May 18, 3:46 pm

    guys,

nice intro to the 35mm life.

Be sure to look into making a "static adapter" for a normal videocamera. This is the cheapest way to go, but it won't work if you're shooting with an HDV camera. Look for Canon FD lenses on eBay.

And, I made my own "ground glass" by sanding down a typical UV filter with 1000 grit Aluminum Oxide. It works!
