For lasers, there's also the old "black box with a beam splitter at a 45 degree angle reflecting a cut-out of the laser's path with a flashlight shining through it" trick. Rob Schrab used that in some of his stuff, and it has a distinctive look.

  • Deadite280 wrote on August 27, 1:22 pm

This is a great video, but the podcast link is broken.

  • Kevinaz wrote on August 27, 1:30 pm

I have some clips of laser fire that I made that you key over the gun like detfilms muzzle flares, but they're laser fire. Here's the link to them: http://www.freewebs.com/kevinaz/laser%20clips.zip

It comes with 3 angles. Front, quarter and side.

Hey! GREAT prop! I wanna draw Indy Mogul's attention to my prop-making best friend, 'Foil Tape".

(here's a pic, liberated from a plumbing supply place:)
    http://www.plumbingsupply.com/images/aluminum-metal-tape.jpg

This stuff is a little on the expensive side.. about $6 a roll, But it is AWESOME for adding small sections of "chomey metallic goodness" to an otherwise matte black prop (like a laser pistol). Essentially it's like a thick aluminum foil, with a peel-off sticker backing. Also called "Bumper Repair Tape", this is most often (and most affordably) found in the "Duct and heating" section of your local major home-improvement store. One roll, if used sparingly, can last you a long time.

A few chrome highlights can really liven up a "quick and dirty black spraypainted blaster" (like the pistols in this episode)... and can also be adaped to other uses - thinking back to the cyborg effect.

ANyways, great gun. The episoes seem to be getting shorter, and a little less detailed than they were before. While that's good to keep people from feeling like they HAVE to copy your designs step by step.. it's still more fun when we can watch the process unfold (like.. the sandwich episode)... and to be honest, I'm always left feeling a little sad when my weekly visit with Erik comes to an end.

    Oh! and one more thing!

What's on the menu for next week?

  • Todd wrote on August 28, 3:57 pm

BEAUTIFUL! What happens when you type IDKFA and IDDQD?

  • Captain Awesome wrote on August 28, 5:39 pm

While the weapon is badass, its not THE BFG. But, kickass job none the less.

  • Matt wrote on August 28, 5:46 pm

Very impressive. I think I might try and build one of these, but modify it so that it can be more of an arm cannon.

  • Peter wrote on August 28, 7:08 pm

    Tripod as a steadicam? How?

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 11:40 am

Well, Peter. if you have something like a chase scean, or something that requires steady movement, its best to attach the tripod to your camara and hold the legs (keep them inward) this reduces the bobbing created by walking and running. Hope thiat explanes it for you.

  • mac_millz wrote on August 28, 7:41 pm

    Nice gun, though

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 11:43 am

well, if you watch one of the other vids, he tells you that usually the show is thought up over time, which i have learned is a really stressing period. Especially when you're building a BFG with $20!

  • lewis hull wrote on August 29, 12:50 am

Hey Erik love your videos , just wanna let those who dont know when you finish your movies, you can make cool pro looking DVD covers using photoshop or photoshop elements. I dont have it yet but im gonna get it. To see how its done go to youtube and look for guerillabill. Here is his url http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB_EE3JtzPs, and Erick how can i build a safe affordable crane?

  • jackrabbitt wrote on August 29, 1:03 am

  • Tim wrote on August 29, 1:03 pm

OK, that was the best test film ever. Really funny and great acting...

  • Super Cameraman wrote on August 29, 1:27 pm

First, I commented first, what happened to my post?

Second, you say this will cost $20 dollars. Are you ASKING people to pirate special effects software? Not good... At least show us a legal and FREE way to do special effects, Erik. Like using the GIMP or something... This effect will cost over $200 probably (way more I think) if I do exactly what you say to do.

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 11:49 am

If you pay attention to the episode, the challenge was to build a GUN for $20. They already had Adobe After-effects. you should try www.zs4.com for free software downloads. maybe you'le find something...

  • stevewoolf wrote on August 29, 4:06 pm

  • Mad_Ratt_Studios (anon) wrote on March 18, 2:44 pm

awesome job! the great thing for me is i have that exact same cd tower in my atic. also the "trigger thing" looks like an old staple gun

  • phishphansj3151 wrote on August 30, 8:37 am

SuperCameraMan, It's assumed that you have the programs... Erik isn't saying go out and download these programs, hes just saying that you need these programs to make the effect look good, which is an important step in making the gun. Relax

Great episode, the gun looks great.

  • Frost Wolf wrote on August 30, 3:37 pm

I've created my own BFG9000. it kinda looks like the one from Doom and it cost nothing to make. it's so Cool

  • Bookworm97 wrote on August 30, 3:52 pm

    Hi,

I was wandering how do you make fake hearts?? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  • kwame macdonald wrote on August 31, 4:36 pm

it would be so awesome if u made some sort of gatling gun like on unreal tonament that gun is the best one

  • MotleyDrew wrote on August 31, 5:04 pm

Good looking gun. I would load some of those thermoses with something heavy, like cement, or pork or something. That way it would make the gun heavier and the actors would move it slower. The way it is now, it looks way to light to have some serious electronics in it.

  • Brecon Harrison wrote on September 1, 8:52 am

Hi everyone! I would just like to say hi, and please have a look on my website. www.brexta-films.co.nr

  • super director wrote on September 1, 8:55 am

Erik i am seriously addicted to this show and i love making movies. I have a very good fake tissue/flesh effect and i was just wondering if you were interested.

By the way how can you make fake cuts that bleed and have blood flowing from them?

    thanks :)

  • Blu Mage wrote on September 1, 2:26 pm

I agree with MotleyDrew on the heavyness of the gun. It's a really really nice gun, and a great example for a BFG, but I believe Chris didn't handle the gun well enough to actually fool the audience into thinking that it's a big f**king gun.

  • bob wrote on September 2, 2:47 am

    Hey Erik! it's me again!
i just wanted to say that i also have an extremely good fake eye effect that you might use with the fake heads.
And once again i am hoping you can do an episode on cuts that bleed.

    thanks

  • super director wrote on September 2, 2:49 am

that last comment was by me :)
my real name is bob :P

  • Super Cameraman wrote on September 2, 12:45 pm

phishphansj3151, I'm not... unrelaxed, but I think it would be really cool for Erik to do an episode on free programs like Windows Movie Maker, or the Gimp. That way even people without the good programs can do cool effects. Isn't that the whole point of this awesome website? Isn't it so anyone can make Hollywood style effects for cheap?

  • Super Cameraman wrote on September 2, 12:46 pm

What the? Super Director? This could get confusing...

  • super director wrote on September 2, 8:16 pm

  • TheatricalBlood wrote on September 11, 7:27 pm

Hey, you keep mentioning that if I want to make an awsomme home film I could use some Special FX. Well, I tried resurching programs on the internet and I can't seem to find one and you mentionned you had some downloads on your site. Do you think you can send me a link for a special FX program download(peferrably a free program).
    thanks, Huddy.

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 11:28 am

Hudly, if you're looking for a 3d effect, you vould use a free download at www.daz.com. if that doesn't help, just go to www.zs4.com, you sould find a cheap, if not free, software download...

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 11:24 am

you should be able to find that gun at your local dollar store. you can also stop by wal-mart and get yourself a $1 can of black spraypaint

  • striker0 wrote on January 2, 9:32 pm

Backyard FX: BFG9000 Giant Laser Weapon

Erik builds his own version of the BFG9000 Giant Laser Weapon from Doom, using an old CD Tower. And he does it all for under $20 (though it should be cheaper because you should throw away all your CDs anyway and use the CD tower that once held them).
