I have now become a loyal viewer and think that all of your material has become increasingly informative as time has gone on.
All of you involved in BFX really are amazing!

  • Justinsuperstar wrote on June 18, 5:35 pm

We REALLY really appreciate that Kyle, thanks so much for keepin' tabs on our show!

  • Brett wrote on June 18, 9:59 pm

Alright, wootness and way to go. my only question: what can we do to help improve the clarity of the glass? it was kind of yellowish, but that is understandable due the the variety of materials included.

  • Bobby Slick wrote on June 18, 10:40 pm

Very good! Thanks for the demo. But how did you get the fire extingusher in there? Thats not in the durections. Very cool, thanks again.

  • Blazeark107 wrote on June 19, 11:33 am

um i dont mean to be rude i love this effect but is there anyway to get it more clear instead of the yellow color!

  • Kami wrote on June 19, 12:26 pm

Blazeark107, I think the yellow tint came from the fact that the mixture started to caramelise - as you saw, it doesn't help when you break your thermometer by letting it drop into the mixture. Definitely a top tip there! As for BFX, big kudos to you Erik once again for something informative, interesting and so downright entertaining!

  • Metal Moron wrote on June 19, 1:33 pm

is that puppet's eyes made out of bottles caps?

  • losbarbour wrote on June 19, 7:28 pm

Although the temp of the sugar needs to reach 300 degrees the color could have been caused by the amount of heat used. A more moderate heat source for a longer peroid should clear the "glass", giving a much crisper image.

I like the low-budget tricks you guys are sharing. How about a vid on how to find cheap used camera or sound equipment. I'm working with a no-budget mentality and crew that eats pizza for pay.

  • Fox wrote on June 29, 9:57 am

You Can make stained glass by crushing different colored cany and putting it in an oven on a cookie sheet and keep the different colors seperate on the cookie sheet

  • Zombeast wrote on July 1, 1:25 pm

Hey BFX. I'm writing a script right now for a zombie flick and there's a scene where a doctor cuts open the top of a zombies head, kind of like in Re-Animator when Dr. Hill cuts open the dead guys head. I was wondering if you could do something like that for your fake heads episode.

  • zak wrote on July 2, 10:49 am

I'm so glad you did this. Last winter during an ice storm, my car windows were covered with this perfect sheet of ice. I rolled down the windows and they stayed intact. I had fun punching and elbowing them out and afterwards was sad because I thought it would be fun using it in some sort of video. Your method is a lot easier than waiting for the perfect ice storm ;p

  • SunneyTehBunney wrote on July 4, 10:44 pm

    Zak;

Good idea. I say Erik makes Steve watch a scary movie and then Steve's face turns purple and distorted in 7 days. Steve and his amazing cancer-free balls can do anything, I'm sure he can make a special effect/miracle like that. *cough*

Nah, but it would be nice to see someone crawling out of a TV! That's something I've always wanted to try...and not some big screen bullshit, just a simple 21"

  • btcguitar wrote on July 6, 12:58 am

very cool, very cool. ive used sugar glass myself, n its very effective in the movie bizz. btw, creme de tartar-->gets the glass light n breakable.

  • Aeolas wrote on July 7, 3:56 pm

i've found that if you use liquid sweetener u can get the glass to look more clear. my friend said liquid glucose also works but i dont know where u can get that.

  • Aidan wrote on August 1, 12:43 pm

if you heat the glass between 280 and 290 NOT TO 300 you will have a transparent glass because at 300 the glass will start to caramelize so 280-290 will be transparent and it works so try it

  • Skyler wrote on August 16, 4:36 am

Me and a couple of friends used this episode and the previous zombie makeup episode to make a movie for our Media Studies work at college, we ended up making an 'In case of emergency break glass' box, only ours was, 'In Case Of Zombie Attack Break Glass' and instead of the fire extinguisher... it was a shotgun...

  • crosscarriersgeneration wrote on November 17, 1:34 am

Same here, I really want to know how to make bottles. We tried rolling up some sheets into a conical shape while they were still cooling and pliable, but they ended up pretty thick and heavy, and the guy who got smashed over the head said it HURT. Dunno... a real bottle might've even been easier on his head? But one good thing about ours was we made it with molasses, so it did look like a real brown bottle. The conical shape didn't matter much, when we cut to the fake bottle scene it was well on its path to destiny, with big motion blur. It shattered into a million pieces, too. Not exactly realistic in that aspect, but it makes for great TV. Too bad the GL2 tape threading mechanisms decided to freeze right after the moment of impact! Check out the 'final' product at www.crosscarriersgeneration.com. I'm doing some polishing on the edits, but there's a good rough cut there. It's the top right icon on the movies page, Trading Places. Oh yeah, can't wait to build my own Jib. Gonna try to add full remote control though. If I succeed, I'll post my results.

  • crosscarriersgeneration wrote on November 17, 1:49 am

Followup note: Probably better to look us up on myspace.com/crosscarriersgeneration. The CCG website doesn't have transport control yet.

nice work guys- i've been wondering how to make some fake glass for a "car theft" film for school. Just in time- and thank goodness it only takes an hour to set!! :D

  • Pro-MUA wrote on July 14, 4:46 pm

A lttle tip guys if you want it fully window like transparent insted of Corn syrup use liquid glucose!!!

  • LarimerFilms wrote on August 19, 12:57 pm

I need a pane of sugar glass for a movie I am making. The scene where the glass is broken takes place at the school where my mom works. As far as I know, there is no stove at the school. The school is about a 15-20 minute drive from our house.

I was thinking of transporting several panes of glass wrapped up in bubble wrap or something, and put into a cooler for transport. Should I do this?

Backyard FX 6: Break Glass

Erik tells us how to get that broken glass effect without a trip to the hospital (but you've still got to be careful!). It's called "sugar glass" and all you need is cooking spray, corn syrup, sugar, a pot, a pan, cream of tartar, and a thermometer. Get the full cooking plans here.
