Top Ten Summer Movies 2010, Transformers 3 Accident, 3D Bullies: Beyond The Trailer

If Clooney wants to continue to make movies, he's got to prove he can bring in the money at the box office otherwise why would people continue to invest money in his movies?  Winning awards is great, but he has to prove he can do both or no one will pay for him to make another movie, even if it might win an award.

Clooney has established himself as an independent film actor.  That being said, please consider the box office revenue of several of his recent films vs. their budgets.  [All numbers found at IMDbPro] Sure, “Up in the Air” only made 83.5 mil –but its budget was 25mil.  That’s quite a profit margin, especially for an indie feature.   “Burn After Reading” made a measly 60.3mil –but that’s a film with a 37mil budget, and according to Indiewire, also one of the top grossing indie films of the decade [http://trulyfreefilm.hopeforfilm.com/2010/08/what-do-the-top-grossing-films-of-2000s-reveal.html].   “Michael Clayton” made 49mil out of a 25mil budget.  “Good Night, and Good Luck” , a black and white period drama made for 7.5mil, earned 31.5mil at the US Box Office.   Clooney has made a few money losers just like everyone else in the business.  “The Good German” 32mil budget suffered from poor reviews, a limited release, and trying to repeat the success of “Good Night, and Good Luck” –it grossed 1.3mil (however, this film was made just as much because of Soderbergh’s success with the first two Ocean’s films).  Since Indymogul is supposedly a resource for indie filmmakers, it seems like Clooney ought to be lauded for picking interesting and challenging projects instead of ridiculed for not making another “crowd pleasing” Ocean’s film.
