This sounds like the making of a cult film (I'm not saying it is, it needs more time).

But that would be great! Imagine it got similar reaction to Fight Club. After a while actual fight clubs started up. Imagine people going out to try and fight crime like that!

One more important thing, which I'm sure has been brought up by now, is the fact that Kick-Ass barely beat a PG second-weekend movie. Most theaters don't sell tickets to under-17ers, which seriously hurts movies at the box office like Kick Ass whose appropriately rated Restricted over the top violence and "mature" themes attract teenagers just under 17. While I don't think they should change the system, this has hurt a number of movies in the past, such as Step Brothers. Just my 2 cents.

i think u really hit the nail on the head grace. i did enjoy the movie, and will most likely buy the dvd, however it left a small taste that i counldnt quite pick out that would have made it better and after watching ur review u had every reason why it did. thank you. great job.

No need to mention the race comment again, people have already said how inappropriate that comment was. 

Many things about your review annoyed me, but what I want to focus on was, how is it that you can have a review entitled, "Kick Ass - Why did it fail?", then go on to give the movie an 8? That's not too bad at all., in my opinion.
Or alternatively, if you believed it failed at the box office, if you compare it's figures to 'How To Train Your Dragon' it doesn't look too bad considering it's niche and rating.

It still didn't make as much as Sin City and the other movies she compared it to, but with Matthew Vaughn's rejection of the Hollywood norm that probably wasn't the intention.  Kick Ass will always be a great movie, box office success or not.

Keep in mind that How to Train Your Dragon in 3D costs about double the normal ticket price.  More people saw Kick Ass, they just didn't pay as much.  Also I agree #2 is not really a failure/flop.

o yeah one thing im black and I think its absurd to think that a movie needs token black people just for the sake of having black people( thats why the black kid is called token on South Park).
I think that thats needed is really racist black people dont put white people in movies for the sake of diversity. you should have diversity to add to the plot not to satisfy dumb people that get frustrated at the fact their race isent it the movie. If you think like that you can put everyone in it.

I have a question how old do you have to be to see a rated R movie in The Netherlands its 16.

I loved this movie but I think the marketing was completely off nobody in The Netherlands cares for comic books and especially not Indy ones nor will they ever do because comics are overpriced and only really weird people read them here. not even people that play magic the gathering or war hammer read indy comics and their about as nerdy as it gets. the movie shouldn't have been marketed as a super hero movie. super hero movies are often movies people go to out of youth sentiment such as Spiderman and Batman. extreme violence simple doesn't fit in what people expect from a movie like this. also super hero movies is a market reserved for teenagers and in America they dident even get the chance to see it( god that must suck for you guys) I think this movie was awesome and its a pity nobody went to see it.

I was there for opening weekend and WILL go and see it again on the big screen! It was a really good movie I am shocked that it didn't do so well.

I'm going to say the #2 spot at the box office was due to its rating compared to ...Train your Dragon's rating. Kids can re-watch movies over and over, and well this is the only movie out there for them at the moment. What is helping them is that it's a good movie and it's audience. When I watched how to train your dragon, I went during the day to avoid a crowd,  I unfortunately watched it with a group of kids that were on a field trip. Now that I think about it, they might have read the book before hand, and who knows how many schools are doing this. I can guarantee there are no schools taking trips to go see kick ass. (The kids behaved pretty well though)

As far as kick ass use of the c-word and the violence, nobody is going to know it unless they watch it. So that is chalked up to reviewers and critics. Honestly I didn't think it was that bad, I didn't think the word was overused and I thought it was going to be a little more violent....I take that back,I was expecting it to be gory, not violent...it was violent. If anything these were some of  reasons I went to go see the movie. With nothing like this released for some time, I wanted the movie to kick my ass. 

Another reason maybe the theater's themselves. When I tried purchasing two tickets to the showing I was refused by my local theater at each ticket booth even though I'm 23.  So I just went inside and bought a second ticket through the automated machine they have. They carded everybody when purchasing and then when taking the ticket. Because I've been waiting to see this movie for some time now I was willing to jump through the hoops for it, but if I hadn't been as interested then I might not have went through the hassle. 

Oh by the way, I am Hispanic. I would've been completely turned off if there was a Hispanic hero, not unless he was just Hispanic looking and/ or tan and not "I'm Hispanic, I'm in your face"...just maybe something subtle. I understand what you're saying about the demographic side of it, but I feel its fine as is.

So I would have to say its all ..train your dragon's fault, kick ass didn't reach number 1?  Maybe there are enough fanboys out there to start some sort of campaign for the movie to boost its numbers, if not for kick ass then maybe for non studio movie and indie comics. One can only hope.

Oh please! Grace, are you SERIOUSLY playing the race card here? That has to be one of the biggest eye-rollers ever. Honestly, whoever told you that? Tell them to shut the fuck up because not a single person that I know who wasn't interested in this movie said "Oh there's no Hispanics in it, it's racist I'm not seeing it." No, the fact is is that they didn't advertise enough, and had the free pre-screenings. 
I'm beginning to wonder if this was Spike Lee or Grace Randolph hosting this episode...or maybe you've just been contaminated by his constant stream of White Supremacist propaganda. 
I have lost respect for whoever said that Kick-Ass failed due to the race game.

I feel like you're correct in saying that oftentimes tweaking the source material to suit another format is necessary, because movies simply do not have the time comics do to build characters and indulge in long story-archs. But I object to you saying that changes need to be made for marketability. The Kick Ass comic revels in its gritty violence, and while I can understand if thats not everybody's forte, there's really no point in making an adaptation of said comic if you're going to spend all your time demolishing its spirit. Just write an original screenplay if you want to make a PG-13 action movie. Movies like "Taken" worked. Source material should really only be tweaked for artistic purposes, not commercial. I rest my case, and apologize for long-windedness.
