Sure GoodGuyA  Moon was phenomenal my favorite of the 2009 year but district nine wasn't that bad. I'd say 5th for the year. 1st Moon, 2nd Inglorious Bastards, 3rd Hurt locker, and 4th Avatar and then 5th District nine. Although not in the top three 5th is nothing to puke over.

District 9 never had a real chance because it sucked tremendously, so stop feeling bad for Sharlto Never-had-a-chance-in-Hell-because-he-can't-act Copely.

I will continue to say it for a LONG time: Moon was the true star of this year.

The Hurt Locker opened the eyes of the civillians to war (I'm glad it won best picture and Director), Avatar gave us a gateway into new movie experiences, District 9 made us puke in disgust, Precious gave us a slap in the face, but Moon made you think about everything humanity was and is to become.

A sci-fi story that followed aboslutly no bounds in the norm of the genre and so well put together and planned out you couldn't tell the decisions were based on a budget.

Oscars were obvious, but well deserved. I would like to see them be more about the movies though.

District 9 was a clever sci-fi take on the apartheid in South Africa, so it was not only a smart allegory, but just a plain awesome movie to watch. It was definitely the smartest summer blockbuster, and was far better sci-fi than Avatar (and even Star Trek in my opinion). While he may have said "fook" a few too many times, Sharlto Copley was really believable and relatable in the movie. Stop hating!

Oh please. District 9 was a peace of crap that took not at all new concepts and used them as gimmicks to drive a movie. The plot was paper-thin, bland, and unintentionally funny (go watch Chester A Bum's review of it). The acting was not acting. There's nothing "relatable" in any character, especially when you consider Copley was the onl character "fleshed out", which they didn't do either. He did not evolve, see the efforts of his ways. He was a bland mess that capitalized on how grotesque the movie could be in another cheap trick to pull off "horror". And there in lies the problem, it tried too hard on EVERY account. This is Hollywood cramming down a "subtle" message to make us feel smart on every level. It was stupid, racist, gross, and not entertaining in the slightest.

I'm one of the many people who thought Avatar was almost definately going to win best film and best director, I suppose you could say the plot of The Hurt Locker had slightly more substance than Avatar's but overall which one was better purely as a cinematic experiance? Yes The Hurt Locker was exciting but doesn't compare to how immersive the 3D IMAX experiance of Avatar was, right?

"Slightly" more substance? Avatar was just a clichet-fest, and I loathe the day when awards aren't given out based on substance. Best picture should be for a movie that's touching and smart, while best effects should go to movies like Avatar that  only broke new ground visually.

It would have been hilarious if they had somehow found a way to give best CG Effects to The Hurt Locker.  I can't believe that Inglorious Bastards didn't win anything other than best supporting actor.

I am excited for Kathryn Bigelow and think The Hurt Locker was a good movie. But for Best Director?… James Cameron directed his actors in Avatar using technology that had never really existed before! Powerful, convincing performances from his actors who were then portrayed in CG! …That’s gotta’ be worth something.

It is worth something... just not Best Director... if they had a category for Best New Tech-Toys and what you can do with them then he would deserve that... oh wait a minute... Avatar did win for Best Visual Effects! I enjoyed Avatar and would see it in 3D again and again, but what it comes down to it The Hurt Locker deserved to win between the two of them.
