'The Wolfman' Movie Review

agreed! stylistically the film was really good, but the acting and story lacked a great deal. i liked Hopkins in it, but the other actors didn't make me care about their characters. it was just an excuse to remake another classic, but to do it with more blood (i'm surprised they didn't try to fit sex in there somewhere, too), leaving nothing for the imagination...what happened to the subtle horror of 1942's Cat People?

Your right about the plot being fractured, too many Directors and screen writers coming and going! Then they pick that 'Honey I shrunk up the Kids' & 'Jumanji' Guy [To make a Horror! Judas Priest] and the CGI [Bloody cheap skates! I heard Rick Baker offered to work for nothing and they still stuck all that cartoon, 2D, 'Bed Knobs and Broom Sticks' in there! The CGI...Don't get me started... on the face especially. In a billion years time they still won't get facial features realistic and less '2D' looking, the eyes in particular. Even with 'An American Werewolf In London', 30years ago, they realized that. [When all the great facial transformations are going on, all the snout stretching and what not, count how many times you see his eyes opened - Zero, apart from one quick close up where the actor was wearing prosthetics and lenses] No matter how great an artist or computer whiz you are, you won't get it right. They have to understand it's to do with human beings and how we recognize each other. It runs too deep psychologically, deeper than slight of hand and camera/computer tricks. There will NEVER, never ever be a better film than 'An American Werewolf In London', In story, In characters, In unknown actors who out-shined All their better known peers [I heard their remaking that soon B.T.W......WHY? it already looks like it was made last month] I do Disagree with what you said about Del Toro and Emily Blunt's performance though. I'm quite sure it was meant to be that understated, This was Victorian England. The whole country was going through some odd puritanical phase of hiding all emotions and sexuality and being Uber formal toward one another, the word 'informal' hadn't been invented yet. The other problem was the action and the squeezed in extra plots left little time for the best actors to have ever lived to have given you any more of a performance. After all that I've said, I enjoyed the film, the reason I'm a bit peeved is it could have been a Classic! They turned a tragic figure like the Wolf Man into a comic book hero like the Incredible Hulk. Dr. Banner [or whatever his name is] Go's about whining he's cursed, but he only changes when he's annoyed and he usually throws the antagonists about a bit, no-one dies and he turns back! That's not a curse, it's a blessing. If I turned into Lou Ferrigno whenever  some drunk fool started at a bar I'd feel quite good about myself.
 Instead of more gore, from victims that had wronged Laurence earlier in the movie, more innocent bystanders should have got chopped up and the transformation should have been more horrific or painful - get some pathos in there - Then he's cursed! Then again, I suppose you had to have a 'Goody' Werewolf for Sir.Johns part to make more sense.
Any way, like Mr. Richy Reay said ' I hope they release a directors cut so I can see what the producers slashed out, it'll probably make for a better movie.' I bet the characters will be more sympathetic also, having more dialogue and more room to breathe.
 I still give it 4/5 though - Like I said earlier, great movie but fell too short of being the timeless Classic it could well have easily been! [And I bet that's down to all the Chefs being changed around and forgetting where they were with the broth still on the boil and then there's studio's/Producers and all the other 'only in it for the money' types poking good people in the backside with a pitchfork!]

Agreed. Thought it was just OK. Maybe an updated version of the novel would be better? In the meantime, I'm settling for this  prequel to The Wolfman, although I have my doubts.
