Good call on not using the smooth-on breakaway glass. Not only is it expensive, but if you can't vacuum de-gas it, you will just end up with a ton of bubbles in your final product. Also i don't believe it can be melted down to be re-used.

Loved the ep, Zack. So what if we have to buy things occasionally? I mean, not every effect ever done in history is on BFX, so people need to learn to start looking in other places.

Hey Zack, I am currently penning a Superman-esque fan film, and need some effects help. I need:

a) Some way of holding someone off the ground, so that I can surround the walls with green screen, and use the same principle as Erik's spaceship build to make him fly.

b) Large, realistic crystals, for the Fortress of Solitude

c) Some way of making a semi-transparent coloured substance, for Kryptonite, but also a way to would it into complicated and detailed shapes, think the Green Lanterns ring from the new movie.

Zack, this episode was okay. Nice to see a return to form after the Portal Gun fiasco. Perhaps a full head mask, or a cheap wire rig would be good suggestions for next week's build.

In all honesty this was sub par on the level of the hole in the chest fiasco I mean you told us to go buy pre made things and get free things if you can I mean this should have been a tip in a hole break away tutorial where you showed us how to make breakaway furniture, doors, windows, and other such things granted some stuff you cant just make with 20 bucks and you got to shell out the big bucks more or less for something’s its a fact of movie making but in all honesty this should have been a tip not a tutorial I would have much rather had THE FRIGIN CAPTAIN AMERICA SHIELD PLEAS ZACK PEALS WILL YOU TEACH US HOW TO MAKE IT ALL READY!!!! Zack i am a scenic arts graduate in the UK, and i take an interest in special effects. your estimation of 0 is expensive but you only reasearch the Smash Plastic by Smooth-On.
now for all you people in the UK (possibly america as well) go to -Flints Hire and Supply- they sell both the smash plastic and the type used in your episode where you need to heat it up. the latter is just £16 per 1KG and shipping in the UK is normally free if you spend over £30.
also when making break away bottles you must have a very thin wall thickness (no greater than 3.2mm) or the glass will be nearly impossible to break. other than that great video zack can you revisit the 2 part mould build again this time either using plaster or a material called Gelflex.

I am not a patient person. This was not worth waiting for. We all could have done better with that basic gun tutorial you said you would do.

Great show Zack, its nice to know these places are around for those of us who want and need a more professional end result for our film.  Sugar glass is great but it always has that muttered brown look that screams sugar glass.
    I can understand why some people here are upset about this show, but learning about new things is great too.  Not everything can be made on the cheap, remember if you want a quality end result you must start with quality materials.  Also for those who can not afford to buy the materials Zack showed us here, stick with sugar glass (no pun intended...lol)

Well, that wasn't the best subject quite honestly.  If you can't make it from scratch, than just show.  Not quite worth a build episode.

Anyway, another way to make something break is by using CASEIN.  This is a plastic which is extremely fragile and breaks quite well (well, more like snaps lots of times).  CASEIN is actually very easy to get because it's an extract from milk.  It only requires 2 or 3 materials and is fairly easy to mold (it air cools). Also, if you are looking for a cheap mold material, a  tutorial on a silicone based molding agent is here:http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-Your-Own-Sugru-Substitute/.  These two tutorials can be combined to make complex shapes that are extremely easy to break.
