Very cool! This guys has a good personality and he's not over the top. His ideas and techniques seem practical and his instructions are easy enough for a caveman or even a prison guard to follow.

I watch indymogul videos on the regular, even though I'm not a member, and as far as new hosts go, this guy is AWESOME! He offers knowledge, superior quality craftsmanship, and humor. Not to mention he doesn't rush through stuff. Love it!

Hey Mike! Great audition episode. Here's one thing to consider if you are the host: The "Super time-Lapse" part is when you start the build, not when you show what you used for the build.

THis guy is great

This was definitely my favorite so far.  Awesome build!

Takes too long to get to the build, too much banter, sounds scripted, lighting changes, jump cuts, cool robot but too much like a ventriloquist routine. felt like a kids show, Couldn't get through it, lost interest before he even got to his build. the radial dolly was the best.

Awesome job! Every week these get better and better! I get the sense that Mike will put a lot of dedication into this job, whereas some of the other applicants might get overwhelmed by the responsibility as time goes on. I like his creativity and attention to detail. Plus a little MST3K homage with the hosting using robot minions. Go Mike!

I guess I will be one of the few who was not very impressed. I spent the entire time wating for him to cut off a limb with the jigsaw. Poor choice of tool to use and very unsafe for those kinds of cuts. I hope younger less experianced viewers dont follow this lead. A router would have been a good safe tool to use on those cuts. So anyway I will pass on this one mostly because of I feel it was a bad example of safety with power tools.

OMG so far he is the best and funniest he is cool and my fav.

I thought that it was awesome, especially the test film, but the green screen effects were really bad, and in the end when he was asking for comments he acted kind of like a loner and left the joke that he was dismantling the robot.

While I really liked the build, I thought the sound quality was awful, and I didn't really care for the robot shtick. the only time I genuinely thought it was funny was when he took a "whooshing" break and played with the jet-pack as a spaceship. i guess he could do it, but i feel like there are better choices out there.

I think that he should be the new host. He is very creative. The only con I see is that I think he should not do as much silliness with the robot at the begining. Other than that, this episode totally rocks!

Mike and tech a great job. If they did not get the job Indy Mogul should hire them any way.

I meant to say it was a great balance without becoming silly...(my orginal comments below).  The world needs creative folks like Mike to spur us on.  Maybe he can do an episode on building personal robotic assistants like Tec?

I glanced over the shoulder of a coworker and couldn't stop watching.  Mike has an amazing ability to demand attention (although occasionally upstaged by Tec).  I wasn't a Backyard FX viewer before, but now I can't wait to watch the series.  Mike's short attracted a whole new audience of enthusiasts in our work (a bill for lost productivity will be sent to Mike).  I realized how I had been sucked in when I started pointing out how I would customize my jet pack.  Good variety in his presentation and he balanced informative with entertaining with becoming silly.  Great balance.  Here's to a star in the making...

Steampunk-like

He was very good. Not as good as Indy, but still very creative

tech was so cool he should be th host not that other guy in the vid. The build was grate and so was the test film exept he used a WII controler to fly the jet pack. Why not PS3 or Xbox 360.

I liked his workshop, and the build was awesome, what I didn't like was the amount of lead in for the project, and the acting need to be more natural, but as far as a build goes, it was really good, although seemed more like a chronicling of what he did, as compared to an instructional video.

This build was really well thought out (with the smoke) and it was cool to add in a robot! Cool Idea!

Mike, you is tops so far. Not only was your build easy to understand and well thought out, the presentation had lots of style. 
Tec, you did very well and are really hilarious! You just remind of Steven Hawking - with attitude! You came up with the calculation for a real space rocket pack so quickly, you must be at least as smart as he is.

Mike everything was awesome - the props, the test and side clips, as well as the build - again thouroughly explained with lots of hints and tips (and things you learned while making it - I really like that), and you are not afraid to get you hands dark gray.

Yo "Space Man", if I had neighbors/friends that acted half as well as Mike Smith's friends, I'd consider myself a lucky man...

Oh yeah, one more thing Mike, watch the direction of the jigsaw blade when it's making its way towards your hands... Safety first...

Hey everybody!  I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted.  Very cool and helpful to hear what you liked and what you didn't.

A few people asked about the fan.  It was a working motorized fan from an old computer.  I just hooked it to a small 12v battery I had lying around and made sure to glue it down with the air blowing the right way.  If I put it in backwards it just would have blown smoke out the back instead of down and out.  Anyway, TEC and I would LOVE to be back to build more cool stuff with you guys!

I really liked this one. He's a very talented guy. The acting in the test film was quite bad, but I'm not watching BFX for the acting, I'm watching it to learn how to build cool props. My favorite build thus far.

even though we'rebetween host doesnt mean we dont need our effects, if s9omeone could submit a tutorial for a prop gas mask, like one worn by tf2's pyro then tha5t would be cool, I dont think real ones look cool enough so dont tell me to buy a real one, thanks.

A very proficient and creative builder. Clearly has the right facilities and knowledge to do anything. He's likable, sincere, the test film made sense. Kind of gives me a Jim Carrey vibe. Pink foam!? did you go to SCAD? heh. Excellent quality and detail. A top pick here. Maybe a bit wordy i agree, though, but the episode was focused; easy to understand.  Nice work overall.

I think this was definatley the best build so far, probably the best test film as well, but I'm not so sure about the guy himself, but nevertheless he seems really enthusiastic and I can think of worse people to be the host...

With a little breivity in his writing and a better hair cut I think this guy would be a better host then Eric Beck himself. Great job. Amazing attention to detail. However he never explained how he motorized the computer fan.

Looks good, and the build walks the line between goofy fan project and something you could actually use for a short film.  The pacing's a little slow but the energy's good.  Probably 2nd place, so far.

This guy is very skilled builder!  Out of all that I have seen he appears to be the  most qualified. That said, The timing and the audio sucked on this video. With a little coaching he would be stellar!

I liked this audition episode. This one, last weeks blood cannon, and the necronomicon have been my favorites so far.

Build was awesome, best build quality so far. Episode was humorous. I cringed every time he picked up the saw...didn't seem too safe the way he was using it. I would definitely watch him week after week, though. I liked how he lamented the loss of Eric. :)

I enjoyed the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 robot but why are all these builds repeats? Aside from the spider man shooter EVERY one of these videos is something the sight has already done with minor modifications to it... Dont get me wrong it was a gorgeous audition but I don't want a host whose going to rebuild everything Eric's already done.

This was an amazing Build!  I thought Mike Smith did a fabulous job as a host!

At first I thought this submission was a little lacking in the writing and personality department. But as I kept watching and saw the great build it made it easy to let the script and acting slide. Also like that he slid some effects in here and there. I'm still not sure if this is your best choice but he's close, damn close.

This is what BFX is all about, great job.

This was the best BUILD yet. Just like the old Indy Mogul builds. The host wasn't very host-ish, and the acting in the test film was BAD, but the build was THE BEST BUILD YET.

I also think this is your best choice. Other auditions either weren't explained how to use the prop, not original test film, something simple everyone already knows, boring. But this guy, this guy's great very original ( the robot thing was good) he can matain your attention, makes useful props, and explains how to use them properly. 5 Stars hope you become the next host

I really like this guy. He has a great knowledge of tools and prop building as well as filmmaking, and he made a really good episode.

Hahha funny, that was actually really good.  Though I am still debating who I should choose.  The necromonicn thing was ok, though you can't use it for any thing else.  The camera dolly was nice.  The web shooters were nice too.  The blood shooter was absolutly horrible.  This was actually the best so far.

This was really great!  The whole Tec vs. Mike was funny and the Jet Pack looked really incredible!  Very "Steam-Punk-esq.  
I really liked this episode and would like to see what else Mike and Tec have in store for us.
