I was just involved with a film where I did some stunt fighting about a week ago, so I figure I'll share a few things from my experience...

A few people have asked about how to "sell" the impact.  It really isn't magic.  When somebody hits you, figure out where they hit you, and how your body would move as a result.  Never throw unchoreographed punches in a fight scene, so you should never have to think about where to go when you get hit.  One helpful tip is to have a monitor on set/location so that the performers can see how they look on it.  If they can see their own motion, they will be able to quickly try a few variations and see what looks best.  Another important thing is that your hand should really be at least six inches from the other guys head.  Consequently, be careful with your lighting scheme, as some shadows will make it obvious that you aren't as close as it should look.

All the stunt work I didon this recent project was with a group of henchmen attacking a main character, so it was a little bit different from the one on one fighting shown here.  One other thing we did differently was that instead of calling "1 2 3 4" for the moves, we called "punch" or "kick" when we attacked the main character.  Either probably works for helping everybody keep track and know where they should be in the choreography, best bet would be to discuss with the talent to see which method of calling moves they find more valuable/safer.

As for the guy asking about car crashes and terrorist attacks...  Well, there are a lot of potential ways to approach it depending on how much work you want to do, and what you know best.  Thebest bet may be to take a Hitchcock like approach and avoid showing anything that is unnecessary.  The imagination is quite good at visual effects work.  For example, I might consider doing something like having a series of shots showing the terrorists lining up, and getting ready to start the attack, intercutting with the people in the convoy, and the lover of the guy in the convoy as she looks over the city or whatever.  Then, in an interior shot of the front car in the convoy, and for a few frames you see the missile streaking toward the car.  (Either a prop shot on green screen or a CG missile, source doesn't really matter - whichever you are more familiar working with) and then you cut away to your shot of the extra character looking over the city as she sees a plume of smoke rise over some buildings.  Smoke can, like the missile be either comped pyro, or a CG particle system.  You'll need to do some compositing for what I suggest, but not a lot.  And, probably not as much as if you tried to really show the cars being hit, and all sorts of fighting, etc.

Wow that was pretty good. I am in Tang Soo Do and thought that you guys would give dumb advice (no offfence), but I am amazed you didn't just rely on what you already knew you actually went and found what you where looking for and it actually wasn't corny. NICE WORK!

I actually don't need to make a better fight scene in order to critique the one they produced here. I've seen better fight scenes and I can pick out what makes them better, then share that with others.

Steve First Off Nice Use of the word prime, 2 Model Cars Wouls work better I'm willing to bet, with the right paint you can make a pile of sh^& look like gold!

Interesting video on fighting....very informative...but I think a weekend EXTRA on selling your punches and kicks (similar to that of theatre performance) would be even more helpful because essentially even if you through in the best sound effects and have the best cam operator, if the viewer sees you miss your punch....you look like a highschool "just for fun" video.

 hey steve and macevoyproductions. you might be anble to do a pile-up with miniatures. ger toy cars. smash 'em with a hammer, and film in front of a green screen. then when you get the scene done. put like a highway or watever you were gonna put in the background

Patrick, you are a dick. These guys are awesome and are just trying to help. You do something similar to what theyve acheived and then you can bag them, untill then chill out and enjoy the cheap but QUALITY backyard fx.

With camera movement and changing angles, its important to find the right balance. If your camera just sits still, the action is often less interesting (unless your dealing with large scale fights). However, if your camera moves and changes angles, or distance to much, the fight becomes difficult to follow and equally uninteresting.

I have a challenge for Indy Mogul! I'm currently writting a script and producing/directing a movie about a virus outbreak and there is one scene I cant figure out how to do. A big car crash, its a convoy of three cars that gets attacked by a local terrorist cell. I really need some help, advice even. Please!

I don't think there is real trick to fake punches and kicks. It's all about camera angles so you can't see how far the fist is really from the face. Another trick is going it a little slower then in real life, then speeding up the footage in post. 

Brendan Krick: The guys at Westhavenbrook actually edited the test film so I can't say for certain, but it looks like they increased the contrast and color saturation a lot. Giving it that cool, bad 70's movie look.

Good stuff, but like a comment above, more detail on the "how to hit" and such, and not actually beat the hell out of each other is needed.  Still, nice segment.
