Hi, I love this follow up. It does look real.
So far, you're educating us in the use of physical materials. It's fantastic. I have some ideas. Some of them aren't rebuilds.
How about helping us learn how to:
1, composite a complex scene
How a series of tutorial on Shake (Mac and Linux...apple.com 30day trial)? Or some other software (anything?) that's aimed for the hobbist. If I was earning money from working in Shake, I wouldn't mind pay it's cost.
2, Revisit SPACESHIP but as a 3d render?
Finding free wireframed space ship designs and animating it's flight in software like Maya.
I know Maya, Vue, 3d Studio will blow up the 50.00 budget. How bout the free Blender.... Blender.org. I've been struggling to learn this (and set it asside in favor of finishing a script) software on my frustratingly slow 500mhz G4 computer.
Really cool episode.
Maybe revisit the fake heads one, and make them with your own faces...
Then everyone could see blowing up Erik and Justin and Steve and everyone!!!!!!! :D
I would really like to see you guys do another fake head episode, preferably with a bullet to the head- as this is a crucial effect for any zombie movie. Of course for long shots you can use less involved techniques- but for tight shots I'd like to see you guys mold someone's face (as with the hand) and put that face on a mannequin head, and blow that zombie's brains out! hope you're up to the challenge!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of alginate, Erik! For those who need to know, alginate is used by dentists to cast your teeth so check online or in your phone book for dental supply companies. They'll have what you need. When I was a teen, we had a suplier in my town. I got weird reactions when I walked in there and told them what I needed. But I became a regular customer.

The Fake Heads, in the beginning the fake hands were very fake looking but now you made it look real so I think you could definitely make a better fake head
Ya revisit the limb tear episode, what I propose you guys do is get a pan pour Mask Latex into it, let it dry, once dried cut it into little strips, 2, by 8 inches high and wide, stuff them all together to make them look like muscle, cover em in red food die, pre cut them so they can rip, but do so in a acward way so it looks better on film, then put cloth over it staple the latex bundle to a piece of wood and there you have it
Sorry I forgot make sure when you attach the latex to the wood you knot it all together and hold it in place with two rubber bands per each side, and don't hesitate to make the latex strips bigger
Sorry also use two separate pieces of wood and pre-cut them so they look like two upper case T's so you can staple each piece of latex on the top of the T's, and when you do make sure you stretch and turn each piece so there all bundled up and inner locking on both sides, and it wouldn't hurt to add a fake bone in the arm
Hey erik. This was great. This was the best BFX in a while. Thanks for putting the build plans back up. This hand looked so real. I would like to see you redo the Swamp Monster. I think you could have done so much more.
awesome, but maybe seperate the fingers a little and use fake press on fingernails on the fingers to give it an even more realisitc look to it, specially if you want to maul up the fingers.

Go for a redo of the Beat Up Look Episode! You could go into more depth about how to make bruises and cuts on different body parts other than the face! Especially useful when using a sword fighting scene and you want to emphasize the wound!

Nice revisit. My only concern is the use of a condom. I can assume that most parents would be weirded out if their kids asked to use a condom in a movie. Is there a substitute item?
To save your time and effort, instead of using the plaster gauze, for smaller body parts put the alginate into a container such as a quaker oats tube, try to make sure there are no air bubbles in the alginate, and dip your hand in as centered as you can until you have it resting about one to two inches above the bottom of the container, let it set and pull your hand out, then all you have to do after getting your positive mold is rip apart the carboard and alginate.
do you think we could see the BFG redone with some of your newer effects? it'd be pretty sweet to see some random limb getting blown off by a huge blast of energy!
I would like you to talk more about lighting. I am currently doing a film for the LA film festival and it is a scene where the actor walks through an alley at night, how would I get the perfect lighting and could I use a fog machine for this also. PLEASE I NEED YOUR HELP!

hey, i loved the gunshot effect from a while back...it just seemed a little bit complicated( i watched the other guys thing...i tried it, and it was not convincing) you should redo the gunshot effect by making an acual flash from the gun and an eaiser blood squirt...i want it to be bloodarific...thanks

The fingers looked so fake. fingers cant keep stick together like that all the time. and the hand's bouncing like a rubber ball. Its look is very realistic, but when you chop it. it look fake

Since when you chop the hand it looks really rubbery and fake, it might be better to just show the cleaver coming down, barely hitting it, and then the reaction on the persons face. then you show the hand chopped off. after the repeated chopping, anybody would know that it is completely fake. it bounces and jiggles too much.
haha i guess Herman McGerman face was too stupid. I'm not sure what I would like to be redone, but it would be awesome if you did something that would need the wheel to land on "Trip -2- Jersey".

To save your time and effort, instead of using the plaster gauze, for smaller body parts put the alginate into a container such as a quaker oats tube, try to make sure there are no air bubbles in the alginate, and dip your hand in as centered as you can until you have it resting about one to two inches above the bottom of the container, let it set and pull your hand out, then all you have to do after getting your positive mold is rip apart the carboard and alginate.

So far, you're educating us in the use of physical materials. It's fantastic. I have some ideas. Some of them aren't rebuilds.
How about helping us learn how to:
1, composite a complex scene
How a series of tutorial on Shake (Mac and Linux...apple.com 30day trial)? Or some other software (anything?) that's aimed for the hobbist. If I was earning money from working in Shake, I wouldn't mind pay it's cost.
2, Revisit SPACESHIP but as a 3d render?
Finding free wireframed space ship designs and animating it's flight in software like Maya.
I know Maya, Vue, 3d Studio will blow up the 50.00 budget. How bout the free Blender.... Blender.org. I've been struggling to learn this (and set it asside in favor of finishing a script) software on my frustratingly slow 500mhz G4 computer.

I would really like to see you guys do another fake head episode, preferably with a bullet to the head- as this is a crucial effect for any zombie movie. Of course for long shots you can use less involved techniques- but for tight shots I'd like to see you guys mold someone's face (as with the hand) and put that face on a mannequin head, and blow that zombie's brains out! hope you're up to the challenge!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of alginate, Erik! For those who need to know, alginate is used by dentists to cast your teeth so check online or in your phone book for dental supply companies. They'll have what you need. When I was a teen, we had a suplier in my town. I got weird reactions when I walked in there and told them what I needed. But I became a regular customer.
The Fake Heads, in the beginning the fake hands were very fake looking but now you made it look real so I think you could definitely make a better fake head
Bettah. muuuuch bettah! The only thing I would change would be to separate the fingers so they don't all stay together as the hand flops around.

Ya revisit the limb tear episode, what I propose you guys do is get a pan pour Mask Latex into it, let it dry, once dried cut it into little strips, 2, by 8 inches high and wide, stuff them all together to make them look like muscle, cover em in red food die, pre cut them so they can rip, but do so in a acward way so it looks better on film, then put cloth over it staple the latex bundle to a piece of wood and there you have it
Sorry I forgot make sure when you attach the latex to the wood you knot it all together and hold it in place with two rubber bands per each side, and don't hesitate to make the latex strips bigger
Sorry also use two separate pieces of wood and pre-cut them so they look like two upper case T's so you can staple each piece of latex on the top of the T's, and when you do make sure you stretch and turn each piece so there all bundled up and inner locking on both sides, and it wouldn't hurt to add a fake bone in the arm

Go for a redo of the Beat Up Look Episode! You could go into more depth about how to make bruises and cuts on different body parts other than the face! Especially useful when using a sword fighting scene and you want to emphasize the wound!

Since when you chop the hand it looks really rubbery and fake, it might be better to just show the cleaver coming down, barely hitting it, and then the reaction on the persons face. then you show the hand chopped off. after the repeated chopping, anybody would know that it is completely fake. it bounces and jiggles too much.
I'm going to hope that no one ASSUMES it's a REAL hand

1, composite a complex scene
How a series of tutorial on Shake (Mac and Linux...apple.com 30day trial)? Or some other software (anything?) that's aimed for the hobbist. If I was earning money from working in Shake, I wouldn't mind pay it's cost.
2, Revisit SPACESHIP but as a 3d render?
Finding free wireframed space ship designs and animating it's flight in software like Maya.
I know Maya, Vue, 3d Studio will blow up the 50.00 budget. How bout the free Blender.... Blender.org. I've been struggling to learn this (and set it asside in favor of finishing a script) software on my frustratingly slow 500mhz G4 computer.
3, space helmet rebuild? Alternative design?
4, Colour Balance? Kelvin? Tungsten? Daylight? FL light?

I would really like to see you guys do another fake head episode, preferably with a bullet to the head- as this is a crucial effect for any zombie movie. Of course for long shots you can use less involved techniques- but for tight shots I'd like to see you guys mold someone's face (as with the hand) and put that face on a mannequin head, and blow that zombie's brains out! hope you're up to the challenge!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of alginate, Erik! For those who need to know, alginate is used by dentists to cast your teeth so check online or in your phone book for dental supply companies. They'll have what you need. When I was a teen, we had a suplier in my town. I got weird reactions when I walked in there and told them what I needed. But I became a regular customer.

Ya revisit the limb tear episode, what I propose you guys do is get a pan pour Mask Latex into it, let it dry, once dried cut it into little strips, 2, by 8 inches high and wide, stuff them all together to make them look like muscle, cover em in red food die, pre cut them so they can rip, but do so in a acward way so it looks better on film, then put cloth over it staple the latex bundle to a piece of wood and there you have it

Sorry also use two separate pieces of wood and pre-cut them so they look like two upper case T's so you can staple each piece of latex on the top of the T's, and when you do make sure you stretch and turn each piece so there all bundled up and inner locking on both sides, and it wouldn't hurt to add a fake bone in the arm

Go for a redo of the Beat Up Look Episode! You could go into more depth about how to make bruises and cuts on different body parts other than the face! Especially useful when using a sword fighting scene and you want to emphasize the wound!

To save your time and effort, instead of using the plaster gauze, for smaller body parts put the alginate into a container such as a quaker oats tube, try to make sure there are no air bubbles in the alginate, and dip your hand in as centered as you can until you have it resting about one to two inches above the bottom of the container, let it set and pull your hand out, then all you have to do after getting your positive mold is rip apart the carboard and alginate.
