you should make an exploding body like in that scene from robocop where that guy drives through the toxic waste then walks out in front of the other car and gets splattered all over the windshield
you should try this again and secure th "Muscle" better so we can see how it should have looked
Hey no sweat, I like how your videos show the basics that are good enough, its all up to the individual to take it from there.
tihs reminds me when is the chest rip episode
Hey, i noticed at the end there it says you use a canon gl2. I am looking to get more serious in movie making and wanted something a bit better than what i have now ( a Panasonic MiniDV Palmcorder). I'm looking for a camera that gives me a more 'film esque'. So it looks more professional than mine. Is this worth it? or should i look for something better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7CV3PTIQsk
wait until 4:05ish
hey erik, I took your limb tear in a different direction and also tweaked it a bit but yeah lol. I'll send you a picture of what I did or you can just email me saying you want to know what I did lol. It's rather cool I would think so but yeah. :D Talk to you guys later.

great vid! could you do a re-take of that ripping scene 'cept rap duct tape around both sides? (i read the plans.)
cheesy, but cool. low-budget stuff is fun. =]
Awesome thanks eric your the best this will be extremely useful.
brilliant effect. putting heir on the leg i think would have made a the effect a whole lot better, also masking the slight dodgyness of the skin.
just a thought
hey erik. i was wondering. what program did you use to make that cartoon of your thoughts. it'd be awesome if you could answer.
All I know is that he uses the same as www.youtube.com/gryphern
The 2nd limb tear looked good but im pretty sure below your knee you have two leg bones, how come you only did one?
the new tv show moonlite has a scary vampire episode
could you use the same method for a disembowlment scene?
You could use the same kind of skin for a belly, and then fill the insides with something for fake guts.
i requested this but he Erik didn't mention Hole-in-the-Sock Productions
good
you should keep the broom stick together and and do it excatly like this then kick it in
when is QandErik on?
You guys do realize it doesn't have to be a strait tear like that, it could also be done as a break then tear. And it doesn't have to be a zombie, it could be a large monster or even heavy machinery.
Besides the concepts are all very useful for general gore effects.
large monsters and heavy machinery.. psshh .. everyone knows zombies are cooler ..
2nd coat
If you make a swampmonster, could you make a Yeti after that (a snowman)
i love it! yeah i just bought a cheap plastic skeleton for $35 dollars, and its awesome! i just cut off the leg, made fake skin on the outside, and did my work from there. its really the way to go, and it looks so nice.
send a vid in
man that was good but you said that you pinned it would it have been better if you had used hot glue to bind the "mucel" to each side of the lef. still excelent project, can't wait till next monday.
That is so cool
Aha! So it was the side that was "embedded" that came out, and the pinned side that held fast. I guess try pinning it down on both sides and see if that holds together?
Exactly what I will do next time. It's all about learning.
For John Carpenter's The Thing, they made a tendrilly neck out of a bunch of stuff mixed together, including bubble gum, but then the fumes it was giving off caught fire.
Nice test film even though the effect didn't turn out. The sped up effect you did...did you do that by lowering (or raising, I just woke up) the shutter speed? Or did you do it in post?
Which sped up effect? The "Super Time Lapse"?
No, the part where the zombie Steve looks sped up.
I don't think we sped up Steve at all.
How cool was that!! This makes George Romero look like a pansy!! Nice Job
As soon as you do a good zombie bite tutorial (probably using the "chunks of flesh" technique) then you will have covered all the zombie basics. With a cheap dummy, some limb tearing, and good bites, anyone can make a sweet ass zombie flick =D
I think we need to do a special zombie page with just the tutorials on bloody gorey stuff. Maybe with it's own domain as well.
yeah. that's a good idea. most young filmmakers want to make zombie movies, because they are super cool. so a page with just tons of zombie tutorials and tips, including some user submitted, would be a cool idea. zombiemogul. or indyzombie. or zombieFX. those are decent titles.
Hey guys, I just watched this episode and I was stunned. I really thought you did a superb job! But if you don’t mind I am going to give you some pointers on how to make the “tear” a better effect. (I am a Special-make up effects artist so I do know what I am talking about) Now, for the “Muscle” stipple several layers in about four inches long of liquid latex. Then glue those in your leg, for the blood blasting out, I have found no better way too do it than this. Go to an auto parts supplier and get an Oil Suction gun. It’s basically a huge syringe. Find some tube that fits into the tube that comes with the gun. Seal those pieces together and get a balloon, insert your tube into the balloon and cut about five small holes in it. You have just created a bladder! So instead of having six tubes coming out of a water bottle, just load your syringe with blood, insert the balloon inside your leg, glue in the latex and rip away! Hope this helped guys!

Such awesome advice (looks around) Erik get over here and read this!
WOW, these are some awesome tips. THANK YOU!
Erik, why didn't you use the Tom Savini "chunks of flesh" effect from "Day of the Dead" for muscles? It's a really simply made effect (it's just dyed, rolled up strips of latex) that looks great. Are you saving this for another episode, perhaps?
that was seriously awsome best episode yet!
the skin looked real, but in the muscle, you could see solid white where blood didnt cover. but if i were to have worked correctly, then it would have looked really good. simple fix for the effect, and for people who want it to be real as possible (although, look at the concept of the SE), you can have the fibula and tibula or whatever the bones are called.
I love weekend projects!!!! especially the beam bots and messenger bag. Bre, Steve, and Eric on the same show is like The most super DIY podcast in the universe!!!
HAHAHAHA SWEEET!!! GO BRI! makezine is so awesome!!!!
wow that really just made my week!!!!!
tHATS WAS A REALLY GOOD EPISODE
BUT THE ONLY THING IM THINKING IS HOW HE PULLED HIS LEG OFF, I MEAN WOULDNT THAT MORE JUST DRAG HIM
NICE THOUGH!!!
Well, in zombie movies, people seem to tear apart with amazing ease. I've always been rather concerned about this. It seems that the moment that a zombie virus is released, all uninfected "future victimes" become instantly fragile and pliable.
I think the idea is that the zombies are supposed to be unbeleiveably strong, but they do always seem to have "easy tear away victims"
Still, the effect looked almost as good as in the movies. And tha's a compliment!
More insightful radness from the ZebraGirl!
A good way to have added even more blood at the tear is if you had filled a red balloon with fake blood and then hot glued it on the inside. That way, you get a really nice blood gush right at the tear.
that was actually a pretty amazingly good effect, right up to the point where the muscle tear failed. YOu gues did a great job on that one.
Glad to see Gary made the move to new york too.
well i liked it...effects like this are hard to do...yes you can go out and buy cheap stuff but to do all of this yourself and make it as interesting as these guys did...good for them...great effect...it was hard and complex and well..COME ON..it was full of awesomeness
Weekend Projects & Indymogul in one episode!! This is awesome!!!
oh kick ass
Freaking awesome.
Bre Pettis, Steve and Erik on the same show = WOW!!!
Good job guys, thanks for keeping it real, and for the AWESOME projects and ideas.
"Life is like making a movie, if something goes wrong, there is always a chance to do it right"
i like the episode and i see how it would have looked awesome, but one thing bothered me. you forgot you're basic anatomy! the lower leg has to paralel bones that are used for twisting the foot. they're called the tibia and the fibula (as ilustrated on this picturehttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Human_skeleton_front.svg)
so when you had the chance to go for 2 broken bones, you went for the incorrect measaly single bone. tragic man. you could have really done something beutifull but now you fucked up... anyway, i love you're show so just keep em comming
wow that was awesome great episode, im definately gonna do something like this, even though it didnt go as planned it was still great and practice makes perfect, and regarding daniel i was so amazed that erik tried something like this i didnt realize that it was anatomically incorrect and now that you pointed it out i dont care cuz its still a great effect
could you make fake mussels please.
fake mussels, or else:(
I disagree, the affect was good for one of the shots, the only problem was the foam looked fake because it had a strait edge, and once torn off the limb didn't make a good prop. You can buy pre-made fake torn of legs, hands and arms for fairly cheap. If you plan to use the effect again I suggest you buy a bag of these.
Where is the SWAMPMONSTER :(
come on! the limb tear tturned out awsome! i'm glad you mentioned using rubber gloves when handleing blood! you might get AIDS!!!!
Very nice episode. Only problem was when your leg didn't separate as it should but over that nothing that bothered me. Cool
Awwww would have looked great
very cool. It looked realistic till u saw some textiles or something hang out... but when u showed it again after the etst film it looked realy nice! :D
OH MY GOD YOU UESD BRE PETTIS!
Would it have helped if you had sewn the foam to the ducktape?
awesome episode, i'm making a zombie movie this year and it's definitly going to be in it
Dejavu!Lol!
