Dude this episode is flippin awsome!!! in case you havn't got my message i sent to you on youtube, my friends and i are making a monster movie and we need some good stop motion models. we tried using wire frame and tin foil and clay and nothing works! i did some research and all the methods are like these professional expensive methods. please help me erik! i love your show!!!

  • Carbuncle wrote on August 20, 2:23 pm

is this method also usable for faces? then you could make a perfect replica of your face to blow up instead of some dude with a mustache, glasses and a wig...

  • joshleo wrote on August 20, 6:07 pm

Can you dye the ballistics gel with an opaque flesh colored substance? we used to mix liquid foundation makeup with Knox gelatin to make a gel that could be added to the face with cotton balls. The makeup made it look like great flesh... less peeling.

  • Aria wrote on August 20, 7:57 pm

haha the edward scissorhands tribute! love that!!
you are sooo lucky! kep up the good work!!!

  • Blu Mage wrote on August 20, 9:28 pm

Dude! Whoa, nice job guys! Congrats on the sponsorship, and the awesome tutorial about fake hands. You know, I bet you I can be daring enough to mold my face in plaster. Hmm...I'm sensing some very creative thoughts here. Maybe I'll send it in.

  • Wndx wrote on August 20, 10:26 pm

How much did this all cost?

  • Matthew wrote on August 20, 10:35 pm

i would really like to know how movie makers do the shot of a person running around on fire. I would also like to see how they make make burn marks on burn victims. If u could do this for me i would be really happy,

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 12:16 pm

well, matthew. i would like to answer that for you. the actor is using a fire-resistant suit under the regular suit. if his head is on fire, he has a mask of the same basic material. he is then carefully covered in accellerant and, when the director says action, ignited. But keep in mind, there are always two or three people standing by with fire-extinguishers to put the fir out. there is also a certain amount of heat your skin can take, but i wouldn't recommend it.

  • Walucas wrote on August 20, 11:28 pm

couldnt you doe the same for your feet?

  • Mr.Moop wrote on August 21, 12:34 am

I love the show and glad you got sponsored by 'war'....but i would like you guys to stay awesome and not get any more banner adds or let people spam you user's with pop-ups. Love the show still and was thinking you should do an episode about making squibs(the exploding kind) with firecrackers or something.

  • Ryan wrote on August 21, 1:44 am

Carbuncle: It's trickier to use plaster on someone's face, since there's a lot more hairs to catch it on, you need to keep a breathing passage clear, and you don't want to get it in their eyes.

A lot of people use dental alginate for molding a face.

  • vespasrock wrote on August 21, 2:00 am

where did the quick tips go???? where did the next week previews go???? and is that the chick from Jetset?

  • cian wrote on August 21, 6:18 am

what happend to the sci fi blaster thing?

  • roadkill wrote on August 21, 8:08 am

Hey guys... great cheap way to do this. I was surprised that you didn't explain the health risks of using the plaster of paris on skin. From experience I know that (not always) sometimes the chemical reaction in the hardening of the plaster of paris can cause chemical burns on certain types of skin... that's why they mentioned to remove the mold as it's heating up. Also, Dental alginate is a much safer way to do a mold, but requires a mother mold (hard mold) beacuse the all alginates are "floppy" or bendable. Alginates are more expensive too and are typically only good for one MAYBE two castings if your lucky.

If you want to mold a foot, you'd probably have to do a 3 part mold (bottom, top/front 3/4 of foot & back of the foot "behind the ankle").

I would HIGHLY not recommend molding a face with Plaster of Paris. If you do decide to do this, make sure you have at least one other person around (at all times) when attempting it and work out some sort of non-verbal communication first.

    Hope this is helpful...

  • BLake wrote on August 21, 9:57 am

Hey, I'm a loyal viewer, I love the show, but I just wanted to mention that it wasn't as good as when the episodes aren't sponsored. I applaud that you got Lionsgate to sponsor the episode, and that you got that good of a connection with them, but I just noticed so I thought I'd bring it up. Awesome show, though, and maybe this would have benefitted from the Wheel of Prosperity? Or maybe just mentioning the total price at the end of the show or something. Still a good technique though.

  • Justinsuperstar wrote on August 21, 11:04 am

Awesome comment RoadKill --- those are all some good safety tips we should be aware of.

  • Indy Mogul wrote on August 21, 11:37 am

re: Blake - thanks for your comments, we shot this in NY so it was a bit hard to travel with the Wheel of Prosperity! We missed it too so it will definitely be included next time.

  • MrBeta wrote on August 21, 12:57 pm

  • punkandska66 wrote on August 21, 1:06 pm

hey erik, if you put caulk on the mold, how do you get the hand out, you would have to break the mold apart right? then you couldnt use again.

  • Deadite280 wrote on August 21, 1:21 pm

I noticed that the ballistics gel hand had a wire endoskeleton. How do you do that and why wasn't it mentioned in the video?

  • ErikBeck wrote on August 21, 3:38 pm

punkandska66: If you use a non adhesive caulk it should come apart without breaking the mold.

Deadite280: The "endoskeleton" is some stir straws we had laying around the office. We only added them because a few fingers broke of when de-molding. Although if you did add some type of support structure it would certainly help.

  • dizzy wrote on August 21, 9:52 pm

  • punkandska66 wrote on August 21, 10:33 pm

coudnt you have just taken a glove like one of those dish washing gloves and filled that with ballistics gel.

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 12:24 pm

you could, but i wouldn't recomend it. you would need a REALLY good makeup kit, a pack of fake nails, and a LOT of patience!!**trust me, ive done it before...

If your Making a face appliance Or one that covers a large portion of your skin For the Purpos Of filming It's good to paint it red before you make the Color blend with your flesh and the reason is The camera Pics up our red pigment (It's red under our skin!) and if you have a full face mask on then it won't blend with rest of your body and will ultimantly not look as good in front of the camera as it does behind it!
But if it's red under the makeup it will read like the rest of your body does on film!!!

Hey Erik, i read alot of viewers were asking how to make fake glass bottles and i was thinking, what if you make 2 half molds of a beer bottle out of plaster or molding compound. Then add your sugar mixture and after it dries glue the two halfs together. I havnt tried it yet but what do you think?

  • ErikBeck wrote on August 24, 1:38 pm

drumsofdoom: Yeah I thought about adding some fake blood. It would be pretty simple to do, but in the end I thought we got enough gore last week with the "fake heads" episode. You should make a blood filled hand and send in a video!
Thanks everyone for watching and commenting,

  • roadsmash wrote on September 10, 4:54 am

another way to make a fake hand is to make a reverse cast. you can do this by yourself and i have made a fake finger and hand using this method. first cover your hand with powder to stop sticking, then apply layers of liquid latex to you hand..drying each section with a hair dryer and powdering. after about 10 layers you can peal off the latex. then stuff it with cotton wool and q tips for bones. seal the end with latex and apply fake blood, (best is ben nye blood effects as it drys- though the colour can be a bit to bright) seal the latex with castor sealor befor applying foundations and cremes. the nails can be painted and cuts made. this is best for a hand that is not too close up.

  • pooperj wrote on September 10, 10:00 am

The hand was cool, but I was wonnerin' if there is goin' 2 be any bolistics gel heads 4 decapotstions

  • dilbot23 wrote on September 23, 8:47 pm

yeah i was wondering if you could use the same process to make a head mould bc i saw them do something similar to that on mythbusters

  • jafitzge wrote on November 18, 10:04 pm

In the ballistic gel episode, he says one ounce, one cup. one ounce, one cup. How many cups/ounces did it take to form HIS hand in this episode?

  • Cynthia wrote on January 12, 6:14 pm

Great site ... my 8th grader has to make a working prosthetic hand that can grasp a ball... with things we have around the house ...what would be the easiest way to do this?

  • steven-starwarz wrote on February 24, 12:09 pm

looks cool, but i would have bought a basic plastic skeleton hand into the gell. But, i would aply the latev to the inside of the mold BEFORE the rest. this should give it a more realistic look.

  • jason (guest) wrote on July 18, 7:16 pm

if you cut a hole in the elbow of your long sleav shirt then you can put you hand through that hole and stik the fake hand into the other half of the sleav, then; you never have to cut the scene.
