Yeah Peterban, I was really impressed with how well my dad did on camera.
And TNTV, the Cyborg episode is AWESOME, only one week to wait.

  • Kevinaz wrote on July 2, 8:07 pm

    What model mic is that?

I use a sure sm57. Is that good enough?

  • nick wrote on July 2, 9:55 pm

Yo Erik idon't know how to use final cut pro. Would windows movie maker as well? i want to be a directer but i like sfx just as much!

  • DrDoobious wrote on July 2, 10:04 pm

Nick I'd say work with whatever program you can get your hands on! Make movies non-stop, and if it starts getting you some money, look to purchase a better program.

  • nick wrote on July 2, 10:11 pm

thanks dude i am actually in the processe of making a 9/11 film and i am taking it very seriously. anyway i would like to build an air plane but need some guidence... and no i dont mean afull scale one! but please help! do your best

  • daydreamer1 wrote on July 2, 10:47 pm

Hi Eric,I'm in need of an editing system.Windows Movie MAker stopped saving my projects.Whats the next best and affordable system to buy?

  • JulioTheBlueGuy wrote on July 3, 12:16 am

Pretty cool robot. I'd like to see you guys make a Lizardman. As in either a huge puppet, a costume, or maybe even make-up (that is if it's possible for make-up to look like scales). I need it for a short monster movie I'm planning to do.

  • RevAnthony wrote on July 3, 3:11 am

Same question as KevinAZ -- what sort of mic is that, and would you recommend it? I've tried to search for boom mics, but all I get is information about stands (I didn't realize that the "boom" in "boom mic" refers to the stand and not the actual microphone). Assumedly, one could just buy whatever microphone they wanted, attach it to a stick, and voila -- it's a boom mic, right?

  • SunneyTehBunney wrote on July 3, 3:26 am

daydreamer1- Though illegal downloading isn't...well, legal, it can help you out. I just downloaded Adobe Premiere for free :/. You can use the program LimeWire (download the pro version from there) and then get it from there, or you can use a torrent.

Torrents are much like Peer to Peer programs, but a bit different. BitTorrent.com has all the info you'll need. You can download torrents from a lot of sites, a simple Google search will help with that. A great torrent site is Demonoid.com, they have everything you'd need (except porn...bastards) but, you will need an invitation to join, I can hook you up if you want (they've been down recently.) So...uhh...go with illegal downloading. *cough*

    Please don't arrest me D':

  • SuperRyan wrote on July 3, 10:47 am

    That robot is sweet.

Could you guys do an episode on boom mikes? Like, how do they work? What do they work with? Where are some to buy? I've been really interested in them but can't find the info.

  • mostly harmless wrote on July 3, 12:01 pm

Erik Beck has reached a whole new level of awesome.

  • PeterBan wrote on July 3, 2:21 pm

    Yo Steve..
I was wandering.. Do you have a link for me where i can Download a program so i can do all the thinks with the green screen?

  • Kevinaz wrote on July 3, 3:02 pm

I agree with SuperRyan. An episode about sound and mics would be soooo helpful!

P.S. a great free tool to clean up audio hiss and noise is called wavepad.

  • Max wrote on July 3, 3:13 pm

You said you were doing fake heads! I need a head and arms! Keep your promise!

  • PeterBan wrote on July 3, 4:00 pm

    Yo Max..

Don't worry... I bet the episode with fake heads will come.. And.. Yes.. Erik said that he was gonna do an episode about Fake heads.. But did you hear him say WHEN he was gonna do it..? Don't think so.. Just wait..

  • mystkmastkal wrote on July 3, 5:17 pm

could you guys make an episode about explosions? cause me and my friends are making a short film for our film class and we really need an A+. but i dont want it to be dangerous for my friends safty but i still want it to look good...any ideas?

  • Justinsuperstar wrote on July 3, 7:58 pm

(mystkmastkal) For explosion effects, check out deteonationfilms.com - it's a much easier way of doing it than actually blowing things up. They also have tutorials on their page.

Was it windy the day you filmed this, or was it shot out of scene? Because at 00:32-00:39 the wheel was at $20, then at 00:39 it went to $30. 00:41 thru 00:43 showed the wheel at $20, then at 00:43 it went back to $30. And at 00:49 to 00:52 the wheel was stopped at $40. However, the wheel then managed to go to $20 at 00:53 through 00:55, and at 00:57 the wheel was back at $40. I'm not trying to be a critic, just wondering what the heck was goin' on.

  • ErikBeck wrote on July 3, 9:55 pm

The wheel of prosperity is a strange and wonderful beast...that's all I can say.

  • nymphetamine wrote on July 3, 10:31 pm

  • Kruz wrote on July 5, 1:53 am

Hi. Great robot. I'm gonna try to find some parts and do my own. Maybe someday do a flick with my very own robot as sidekick. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial to set someone on fire.

i know this sounds really lame but how do you do the time lapse thing?

  • michele guglielmini wrote on July 6, 10:02 am

    that's great!

  • Justinsuperstar wrote on July 6, 12:36 pm

(cesigs) Time lapse is just footage sped up really fast. Just record normal speed, capture it all, then increase the speed to whatever percent. There are also programs that can do time lapse with a webcam.

Backyard FX 8: Robots

Robots are cool. Using only a football toy chest, trash can, old video editing controller, blue flash controllers, and some air vents, Erik and his dad construct a super-strong and smart robot big brother. Check out the blog for in-depth instructions. Quick Tip: Audio is important, too. Go buy a cheap, used boom mic.
