Hey Mario, your not going to like my added bit either.  Mise en scene now includes emotion.  It is also everything that the director has control over, including props, actors, sets, composition, costumes and lighting.  Which therefore does include things like when the characters are closer so then does the camera come closer.  Der...directions from the director.. position and movement of the actor is called blocking, but Mise en scene includes everything around the actors as well.  Basically everything that is in the camera shot.  You know, trees, mountains, rivers, cars, animals, weapons, food, etc. etc. etc. what ever makes the scene tell the story or the situation that the director wants to portray.  Plus the emotion, tears, smiles, etc. without word.

Best Mise en Scene is in Lawrence of Arabia! some amazing mirage scenes in the desert!

Actually this pretty much nails mise en scene and certainly goes way beyond the rather limited reading of the term below i.e. just camera blocking...

That is absolutely NOT what mise-en-scene means. In english Mise-en-scene can mean Blocking, that is the set up of your characters, your scenarios and your cameras in a scene. Not that babble.

mise en scene--Brian DePalma -"Scarface" as Tony is about to get killed in the South Beach hotel room the camera floats slowly from the window down to Manolo hitting on some girl in the car.
The sound changes from the chainsaw to the radio in the car and back as the camera floats its way back to Tony in peril.

nice episode guys, stuff i already knew, but really helpful nonetheless! what i think you guys should do is an episode on analyzing film, like taking what you see in a favorite movie and translating it into what you film, which i already do... but yeah. And for the best mise-en-scene, how about No Country For Old Men, like the whole friggin movie, that movie blew me away. aight, peace.

Idk, I was kinda disappointed by the audio quality of this video, it wasn't normalized and level throughout.

Ha IndyMogul I have a great idea for your next film school episode it should be about setting up a set or preparing a seen for your movie, like if you were going to shoot in your backyard how should it look, or in your room how should the background lights should be placed, I mean I know you guys already did an episode on  lighting but I want more! :)

I just saw Paranoid Park from Gus Van Sant. The whole movie is pretty much Mise-En-Scene. Really cool. Check it out if you haven't.
